What a great place to eat, relax and enjoy the atmosphere created by young and enthusiastic staff and other clientele. Polite attentive staff who were helpful.and cheerful. We ordered two starters that we intended to share. Chicken satay skewers and monkfish and tiger prawn skewers. Well when it came we were surprised by the generosity of the portions. Two large skewers on each dish, with red cabbage coleslaw and a pitta bread. Both cooked superbly clearly with care and attention. Flavours were outstanding. Two halves chicken breasts on each skewer (so two whole ones as the starter) in a satay sauce with sesame seeds abundantly sprinkled on them. The monkfish skewers.had four big pieces of fish and several large prawns with salad and pitta. Truly a fantastic culinary treat. To be honest, we didn't need main courses but as this was the purpose of our visit, we persevered. The flat iron 8oz steak in Cafe de Paris butter with chips and salad was wonderfully prepared and presented. The good thing was that the chef concentrated on the food and not just the art of of it. Steak was tender, sauce great, salad a wonderful compliment and the chips plentiful. Only just managed it after the starters! What is there to say about the fishcakes and sweet potato fries? We were expecting two. Unbelievably four, full sized beautifully cooked, golden brown succulent and moist fishcakes were delivered with plentiful sweet potato fries with a mirror amount of salad. There was no way anyone could have said this was a gastro experience rarely matched anywhere. Having enjoyed superb food in quantities that really were more than needed or even required but just hit the 'in excess' spot we all secretly love, we sat and chatted in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying a glass of wine and cider. The carafe of water also seemed all the more sweet. A steady stream of customers throughout the evening made for a lively and yet calm atmosphere. Offered a selection of desserts and not requiring anything else we pondered. The 'special' was apple and rhubarb and elderflower crumble with custard or ice cream. Just a temptation that couldn't be resisted. Seriously, we only had one portion between us and asked for some single pouring cream to add to 'her side of the dish'. Not a problem and when a bowl, full of the most superb crumble came we just gently but steadily experienced a sweet, sharp, smooth and unbelievably satisfying dessert of the old school. A very reasonable bill paid (£66 for two -two huge starters, two wonderful mains, wine, cider and dessert) and we reflected on value (exceptional), service (exceptional), quality of the food(exceptional), enjoyment (exceptional), atmosphere (exceptional) and finally, would we go back and would we recommend? A most definite 'Yes' to both. Thank you to everyone involved. Absolutely...
Read moreMassively disappointed, but let me first say it wasn’t due to the food but the terrible customer service and actually being insulted by the chef.
We had arrived for some drinks and then some food I opened a tab and said that we will be having some food later. After a wait of two hours we actually had some food if it wasn’t for the blonde waitress I think we would still be waiting now. I went up to the bar twice and spoke to the barman and he said that the empty tables were booked and that our table was around the corner not ready yet. Then after about an hour of waiting the girl came over and said that the tables were not booked and if we were waiting for food then we could have food at the empty tables.
After the whole debacle and we finally ate I went up to settle the bill, the chef came out and asked how was the food to which I replied the food was great just a shame about the whole issue with the table. With his reply being “well ur food was out quick” which took me back. He then continued to said “well as long as u are all fed up and happy”. I have been a retail manager for 6 years and would loose my job if I spoke to a paying customer like that, totally unacceptable and then be told “how much you want off then?” Unfortunately the whole experience was let down by two rude members of staff and if it wasn’t for the girl using her initiative God knows how long we could of...
