We booked in for Saturday evening some time ago based on the reviews here. It looked like the best place to eat in Coniston. We were greeeted by the owner and given our choice of table. The place is relaxed and tastefully decorated. The locals obviously love it as he greated many returning customers. We were a little surprised when it took over an hour and a half to get our starter. The owner explained later in the evening that he had staffing problems. There were just 3 of them coping with a full restaurant! To their absolute credit, the food did not suffer. I had the lamb kleftico, which I have had many times in Greece. Never have I had one so good. Words could not do it justice. You can take your own wine, which is charged at £3 per head and pleasingly, they bring water for the table without asking. I tried to book again for Thursday and was genuinely gutted to find it wasn't open. I hope he gets the staffing issue sorted and continues to be a roaring success. The 3 people tonight have worked...

I’m sure it’s a great place if you can get in. We arrived in the area at the weekend to find it was not open until Wednesday evening. When we called on the Weds morning it was booked up over a week ahead. Surprising for a tourist area as people are not generally around that long. I suggest you call them on arrival in the area if you want to dine there, or maybe even before you start your holiday. We also discovered that you can telephone to book a table for Weds onwards early in the week even though it is closed. Maybe next time.

UPDATE

Well, we were due in Coniston so tried to book in advance this time. Phone isn't answered, emails no reply. Eventually got through and made a booking. Great, l thought after reading all the good reviews

Arrived in Coniston and the restaurant was closed both weekends we were there due to "staff illness"

We are staying in Windermere next year. Third time...

A Very Special Thank you to the Staff at The Steam Bistro, who were so Very Helpful and Accommodating in helping me out with a Table for 2, Despite my Error, as I'd Booked for the Friday night, and it was Saturday ( errrr) nothing was to much Trouble, we had a small Wait, understandably as it was a Busy weekend ( Bank Holiday weekend) Fantastic Service, Devine Food, A Superb atmosphere, Really can't say Enough about the Experience... I Highly recommend the Steam Bistro, And Making Dinner Reservation...as they're are Extremely popular , they aren't Licensed, but you can bring your own Wine,They are Currently Open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, Table's From 5.30pm- 8.30pm ... Very Stylish 👌 Cooking, with Local Produce from a range of Suppliers in Cumbria, Award winning ( and Thoroughly Deserved) Set in the Heart of the Village of Coniston.... Its a Great place...please Enjoy...

We love Steam. First visit since they opened up again after covid. They are not licensed, so you take your own alcohol and are only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Booking is a must. They do alot of vegetarian options and are very good at catering for all intolerances. Two courses for £28.95, three for £32.95 and they charged us £2.50 per person for corkage. Excellent value for money. Food and service is second to none.

I’ve been with my husband for 13 years. This was the best meal we have ever had together. Each course was better than the next. I had the beef and he had the salmon as the main. Wow! And the salted caramel bread and butter pudding was the showstopper. I would come back to Coniston just for this place. The chef I think her name is Sara, was so humble. Your restaurant is amazing x love the wine options too xxx
