I first came here in January 2025 with my partner, and soon found myself surrounded by large portions, friendly staff, and great tasting food. Upon my return (June 2025), I was met with the same.
I climbed The Old Man of Coniston in the morning and on the way down, with heavy wind beating upon me, I remembered each step would take me closer to the Full English Breakfast waiting for me at the Green Housekeeper. It did not disappoint. Every time I have gone here, the food has been delicious, with well sized portions, the staff have been curious and friendly, and the prices are respectable and affordable.
Today I was served by Lauren and Louie (or Louis) who were great, though in January I was served by two other Front-of-House staff who were also excellent.
The cakes are always excellent, and takeaway options are available. The tea pots are huge and cute, because they have lil' jumpers so they stay warm. The wait time is good, I imagine because the Cafe itself is quite small.
Which brings me to the only fault I see with it: It's too small. If it were bigger then more people could enjoy everything that's great about it, and I wouldn't nervously be walking up to the Cafe hoping a table is free.
All in all, Coniston has a lot of great places to eat, yet no where deserves the repeat custom more than here. It has a grounded, local, high vibrational atmosphere, with great tasting food.
If I lived here, I would ask to work here, it was that...

The cutest place. So glad we stumbled across this little cafe. We enjoyed it so much that we went back on the second day of our break aswel & we will certainly be returning every time we visit Coniston in the future. The staff are so kind and friendly, nothing too much trouble. They cater for everybodys needs & have a wide variety of options on the menu that you dont tend to get anywhere else. I was stuck for choice on what to choose it all looked so good. The food itself is local produce..so fresh and tasty, and the sour dough bread is out of this world. We would even go as far as saying its the best breakfast we've ever had. The cafe itself is a lovely little cozy shabby chic cafe with lovely decor and nice little finishing touches, which just made it for me. They also offer food & drink to take away & have a lovely outdoor seating area round the back to sit out, enjoy a cuppa, watch the world go by & enjoy the great british weather. We can't wait to visit again..Thanks...
Read moreThe green housekeeper is your classic small cafe. It's nothing fancy, but the food is really good and there are decent vegetarian options. Breakfast service is busy but if you can get a table it's well worth it.
We had cooked breakfasts and our daughter had a pastry. The food came relatively quickly despite the cafe being full.
The green housekeeper opens at 10am on a Sunday but by 10:10 when we were there, every table was taken. Definitely get in there early during summer season.
Our waitress was very sweet and friendly.
There's no parking at the cafe, but you can park for an hour on Yewdale road or you can park in John Ruskin school...
