Our visit to this pub was all OK but nothing more than that.
We chose to visit this pub for food on two criteria: it allowed dogs and claims to be family owned, which we thought would mean better service.
We were greeted by a woman with dark hair that had been home dyed, who had tattoos behind her ears, on her wrists and ankles who was totally disinterested in engaging with customers, though it might just have been us she took a dislike to. Easily done!
The other member of staff was helpful and civil but not engaging. Their service level was best characterised as perfunctory.
The food took a while to arrive even though the pub was not busy. When it did arrive it was adequate but not notable in any positive way. The beer was good, though they ran out of the beer I was drinking between the first and second pint.
I had one of their burgers, which was really rather tasteless and very dense in consistency.
We did like the fact that they provided full size bottles of ketchup and not sachets. However, given these were clearly re-filled from a catering bottle it would be nice to have a new bottle every so often and not keep using the grubby looking bottle we were given.
Prices are reasonable, décor a bit old fashioned, the toilets were very clean. There is nothing wrong with this pub, it is just not as good as it could be with a bit more effort.
An irritation was being asked for a tip when I came to pay. One, I will decided if I wish to leave a tip and do not appreciate having staff try to embarrass me into paying a tip! Two, the service we received did not warrant a tip.
We would go again just with lower...
Read moreA nice pub for tourist and locals alike, well organised and managed busy periods well. A large beer garden (completely rammed while we were here) and a selection of large and small tables inside.
Dogs were welcomed.
A range of real ales available plus the typical lagers if that's your tipple.
Four of us came here after conquering a local peak (11 mile hike in total, I thank you) and had a number of rounds of drinks plus a meal (with pudding) on a tab. The orders were taken quickly at the bar and the food arrived all together and were all hot (three of the meals were vegetarian). The service was great, plenty of young staff to run the food out (very polite). Pudding was offered and accepted - again no fuss and service was great
The food was really very good and a decent portion as well. The veg curries were tasty and well presented. The chickpea burger was also flavorful and the chili hint was perfect. The Talbot burger disappeared quickly which suggested it was also good. The puddings (sticky toffee pudding, lemon tart and tiramisu) were woofed down with appreciation.
Total cost was reasonable considering what we had so happy with that. When paying the waitress was obviously under orders to ensure each person confirmed their tab was correct (politely and unobtrusively but still confirmed).
There's parking in the middle of town or just off in a pay and display (one we used was free after 6 pm).
You can reserve tables and there were noted on tables telling you when they were reserved from (thought that was a good...
Read moreDisappointing Experience and wouldn't return. Not suitable for children. We visited this pub for lunch as a family and, unfortunately, had a very disappointing experience. The food was mediocre, something we could have overlooked if the service had been warm. But sadly, the staff were noticeably rude.
Despite clearly seeing that we had three young children with us, the staff seated us at a table with a wooden window seat, even though there were plenty of other, more suitable options available. Naturally, the children chose to sit on the cushioned window seat, just as any child would prefer a booth over a standard chair.
The real issue arose during the meal, when a waitress abruptly approached our table and told the children to stop moving their feet against the seat. Our children were being exceptionally well-behaved, and the faint sound she was referring to was simply due to their feet not reaching the floor, any movement created an unavoidable noise. At the time, the pub was already lively and loud with barking dogs and general conversation, so her reaction felt unnecessary and disproportionate.
What made the situation especially upsetting was that the way she spoke made our daughter cry. She is hard of hearing and wears two hearing aids, and she was distressed to realise she had made a noise she wasn’t even aware of. The lack of empathy or understanding shown by the waitress was genuinely disheartening.
We left feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. It’s certainly not an experience we’d want to repeat, and we...
