What is in a name? I couldn’t rightly tell you but I can tell you we visited Ye Old Naked Man Cafe for breakfast and the Sausage was good!
We arrived about 10 mins before breakfast finished that day and they sat our part of four quickly and the busy team took our order with haste.
I would describe it as an expensive breakfast as history would dictate, and so expectation was high. The business was quite busy and it was obvious that breakfast was ending and lunch was on the cards. Our drinks arrived quickly and our interactions with the team were mercifully short. Not because they were not of a mind to talk (..it’s Yorkshire after all) but they were busy as the proverbial bees.
Our breakfast came out, as ordered minus this and that as requested. One party member was please to see the beans retained within a wall of ceramic. He was also please to take the fungus off my own plate for his joyful consumption. I may not eat megamould but it saves the pain of rejection to an already busy waitress.
It soon became apparent that this was quite possible the saltiest bacon on earth as we know it!!! I know, bacon is salty, it is to be expected. However it became apparent that we had received the bacon left to the side of the griddle, as the last breakfast guests we were to use up the “Anthony Hopkins” (the remains of the day!) I noted that the lucky table adjacent to us and arrived just minutes later received beautifully pink bacon, not so well done and quite delectable to observe. The black pudding was a highlight and always such a joy to see on my breakfast plate. It is often ignored but then mushrooms which I also see as equally offensive are a staple… because they are cheaper maybe?? (And don’t jibe me for the mushroom thing, it’s my breakfast and fungus has no place on it!) 😉
I quite enjoyed my fruit smoothie but at over £5 I would hope so. I just wish it was a little bit larger… not because I wanted more you understand but because I wanted my money’s worth!!
Apart from the back which sadly got left behind on many of our plates, breakfast was good, the atmosphere to be enjoyed and the black pudding sadly lacking (in quantity as it was lovely!!)
I took the opportunity to pop next door to the bakery and bought a couple (yes two) various pasties for my hillside snack. A meat and potato pie which was delicious and a Jamaican Pasty which was equally enjoyable. It is intriguing to note that I found the bakery to be very well priced and almost juxtaposed to the cafe that was directly connected.
It’s a great place in Settle for a breakfast but get there early so the bacon is not the reason you remember it. Do not forget the bakery next door… quite lovely selection at...
Read moreI have been eating in the naked man cafe for 60 years. First as a child with my grandmother when I lived in settle. for the last 40 years I come up to settle 3 days each month and without fail eat each day in the naked man cafe. Never again. I will drink tea there but not eat. Basically I looked forward to the delicious bread. Also it seemed reasonably priced. I’ve noticeded in the last year or two that the bread has become more and More like cardboard and totally tasteless. My family members say the same and have stopped buying bread in the bakery. But most of all the price increase is totally unacceptable. Today I had my usual cheese and pickle baguette. This was both smaller than before and more expensive - £6.90 for a 5 in baguette with less cheese than usual. No garnish. This is far more than London prices or the price of any other cheese sandwich I’ve eaten anywhere ever. I e given 2 stars cos it’s central and the pot of tea is good - so long as you ask for an...
