We chose the angler as we had previously visited and had a lovely time there last Christmas and were given the same lovely, secluded dining area. As someone with an allergy it is already a scary experience eating somewhere new. To have so little options on the menu is unusual these days as most places will offer to cater to intolerances and allergies if their menu fails to provide adequate alternatives. I asked upon arrival about allergy information and was told that the menu would state what was gluten free with no further information. To my surprise there was only one option for a main which was honey glazed ham and chips. I searched for other options looking to see what could potentially be altered to suit my dietary requirements and asked if the steak could be made gluten free and if the peppercorn sauce contained gluten. The waitress said she’d ask and came back and said it was gluten free so I proceeded to order it as a rare. The steak came out the first time well seasoned and presented with fair sized sides which were garnished. Upon cutting into the steak I’d realised it was not rare but blue and was uncuttable. I asked if it was okay to have it put back on the grill for a little bit longer and if we could have some steak knives and the waitresses took it away and said it was no problem. It came back as a rare with an ungarnished salad, no peppercorn sauce on the side which was a £2.50 extra charge which I ultimately ended up paying for regardless of the fact it wasn’t received and was unseasoned. To pay nearly £30 for an unfinished unseasoned meal is extortionate and as a someone who has worked as a waitress myself I didn’t want to continue complaining and put more stress on her as it appeared that she was new or just a bit nervous and was quick to find out information when she was unsure. After finishing my meal feeling slightly awkward for complaining I went home and was extremely ill and still am today along with 2 other members of our party. We ordered some different cocktails after seeing there was no longer a wine list which all tasted completely different each time we ordered them. A Margarita should not taste purely of lime cordial and neat tequila and the mojitos had a strange flavour during the second round we ordered. Once it was time to pay we were told if we wanted to pay separately we would have to head to the bar which is okay but we were not supplied with a copy of the bill to check over and tally up what we owed. We were met by a young woman at the bar who seemed disgruntled and had nothing to say besides asking what we ordered and telling how much we had to pay. It’s a shame to leave a negative review, we had expected a similar experience to last year’s but after paying close to £50 for a meal which was not good and ultimately gave me an allergic reaction is extremely unreasonable. If the quality of the food and drinks has changed so drastically then the price should be altered...
Read moreWe had wanted to visit for ages and finally got the opportunity last Saturday.
We had booked a table online but was running late, so we had to amend the booking, which was no issue at all and very easy to do.
Upon arrival, we walked in and weren't sure whether to just sit at a table or not, so we just kind of loitered in the entrance. There were a number of people that appeared to be staff stood talking at the end of the bar, a waitress who was back and forth and a lady behind the bar but no-one qreeted or acknowledged us so we felt a little awkward. Eventually, when I asked the lady behind the bar what to do, we were shown to the table.
We had been when it was the orbis, so we were happy sitting in the conservatory and already liked the decor/style, so once seated, we relaxed.
We were given a paper menu, but unfortunately, it didn't have the drinks on it, so when the waitress came to take our order, we weren't sure what they did. She turned the menu over, but it was a blank page, but she quickly got us a new one.
We couldn't decide what to go for, so the waitress offered her recommendations, which helped us come to a decision (thankfully as i think we'd still be sat there lol!) and we chose a classic burger (og?), the flintstone, the buffalo wings and a side of mac n cheese along with two milkshakes.
The food came out in record time....infact it was there before the milkshakes. It all arrived hot and beautifully executed. The burgers were absolutely gorgeous! The flintstone was soooo tasty, and i really liked that it didn't all fall to bits in your hand. You could actually eat it without getting in a mess. Even the classic just melted in your mouth. The chips were perfectly seasoned, and we were surprised to learn that they were only half a portion as there were loads! The wings were lush. The sauce had the right amount of heat and a good balance of cheese. The only thing we were underwhelmed with was the mac n cheese, as despite looking gorgeous, we found it to be a little bland, but that may just be down to our preference.
We had clearly ordered way more than we could eat, but the waitress was more than happy to get us boxes so we could take home a doggy bag.
All in all, we enjoyed the food and overall experience......especially being able to relive our childhoods playing Street fighter & Pacman before we left.
(We would have given the full 5 stars had it not have been for the awkwardness on arrival and would have only taken half a star off for that but unfortunately, Google doesn't allow halves so we...
Read moreHaving gone to Orbis in stamford for quite some time now, after trying to walk in on Wednesday, we couldn't as they were fully booked. So decided to make a trip to Orbis at Oakham. Managed to book a table whilst enroute, for 7:15, with many more tables free around that time. On arrival we found we were one of 5 tables waiting to be sat. So there was about 11 people crammed into the doorway. An no staff assistance. Once finally at our table after a wait of 10mins.. we had to request service, another 15min wait, we ordered water and a bottle of prosecco. After waiting 25mins we chased the order to be told no one had put it through.
We finally had our drinks.. So we ordered our food. This is where it went further downhill..
Food arrived 45 mins after we ordered It... But only bang bang cauliflower and chilli squid...
The cauliflower was underccooked and burnt.. Something I never thought possible.. And the squid looked like it was the scraps at the end of a bag.. Tiny pieces, and Hard..
After chasing further for the remainder of our food.. and being told "we're busy , we have a table of 14 in, probably a good 6-7 times..."
We got Brisket.. But not brisket tacos.. Just hard over cooked brisket.. We also ordered 2 x tempura prawns... We got one dish tho, and it wasn't tempura, there wasn't any tempura in the dish... Now we have eaten this particular dish many times as its out favourite... This wasn't the dish we ordered.. Despite the waitress telling us it was...
To add insult to that.. The dish was bland, and quite frankly awful.
After being given a glass of prosecco each to apologise, and still not having our food.. We decided to pay for what we ate and leave..
In there defense, the waiter told us to not pay, so we just left..
Hungry..and really disappointed.
I'll be honest with you here.. The stamford restaurant is 100x better than Oakham.. Friendlier and way more organised.
The food was poorly cooked, no attention was given to presentation, or even the basics, like the menu's that aren't torn... Chopsticks... Plates without chips or glasses that aren't dusty...
I've worked in this industry and I understand busy and how hard it is to get things right especially if you are under staffed... But one skill is knowing your limits and booking only tables your staff can handle..
I would not go here again, its a shame.. But with stamford being my local I wouldnt waste my time going to this...
