The Bas Bar — Restaurant in England

We were in the area unexpectedly and googled local restaurants. So pleased we found this gem. From the minute we walked in, Ray and the rest of the staff made us feel like regulars. We ordered starters Cheesy chilli masala chips, Memsaab bhel mix and bhajis. My partner likes it hotter than the sun so Ray spoke to the chefs and kept bringing little pots of fire for him to try. We were advised to try the memsaab bhel mix first while it was crunchy. I will travel the 200 miles back just for that dish alone. The portions were huge and full of flavour and just enough spice (for me anyway, my other half had his pots of fire to spice it up more) we were stuffed after the starters so went off for a walk to make space. We thought they were joking when they said they would keep our table reserved for when we got back but no, it has been cleaned down a a reserved sign put on it for us. When we got back we ordered chicken Kari Wala and chicken karahi, we asked for more spice in the chicken Karahi and again when it was delivered by Ray he brought us extra pots of fire to spice it up if needed that had been made specially by the chef. Even the garlic naan we ordered exceeded expectations. You can see the food preparation area and its clean and tidy and the chefs seemed to be genuinely interested to see if we liked our food. When my partner said it was okay spice wise and he could maybe do with hotter they said to call ahead next time and they can prepare for him. We were made to feel like royalty but the food speaks for itself. We will definitely be back. Was recommended The Bas Bar from a friend as we was in the area for bowling. On arrival I noticed it was a pub/ restaurant and was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting it to be a traditional Indian restaurant, dim lights, dark walls etc etc. We were seated promptly and ordered our food drinks in no time. We ordered a big selection of curries and starters and everything tasted spot on, the only disappointing dish was the mixed grill which to put short; over cooked to the point where the meat was so chewy and inedible, on top of that it was far to salty with not much other flavours. This was a waste of £19.50! We expected it to be busy due to the bank holiday weekend, but the noise level in there with the tv’s on doesn’t make it a comfortable dining experience, and the kitchen constantly sounding the bell became to much. I would assume they were short staffed as it became apparent other diners were waiting some time for their food orders. We were lucky to have our food served in a reasonable time, but when we finished we sat there for approximately 30 minutes and still no one came to clear our table. My partner had to go to ask for the bill and we waited another 15 minutes before that came. The food is worth revisiting for, so we may opt for a take away in the future. Have eaten here several times. On this occasion arrived late at 2115 and was told food still available. Ordered food, waiter was great then a further drink and barman said they were closing at 2210 so we had to be out by then. This chap serving at the bar was more interested in being on phone calls via his ear pods he was wearing than anything else. Whilst waiting to served food the chap collected up the barmats and more or less shut the bar. Food arrived and tandoori chicken starter was in fact chicken tikka, when challenged barman twice passed it off as chicken tikka and clearly couldn't be bothered. Lights started being turned off at 2200 and whilst still finishing our drinks all lights turned off and asked to leave.
