At £55 a night, you know what to expect really – so expectations aren’t that high, you get what you pay for – fair enough. Judging by the photos online it looked adequate, and when we arrived the room was basic as expected, but clean and bright with a TV, fridge, bathroom with shower and tea/coffee-making facilities. So far so good. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end.
I can honestly say this was the worst hotel experience of my life. This is why –
We were greeted by the hotel manager/owner, who initially was pleasant enough, checked us in no problems. Later that night when we turned in and went to the bed, the occupants in the room next to us, clearly drunk and on drugs, had a full-blown domestic in the early hours of morning. Shouting, screaming, furniture being thrown around/smashed, hitting one another, crying and calls for help. It was terrifying to be honest, and we felt trapped in our room with no way out as it kept spilling out into the corridor outside our room.
When things had quietened down briefly, I was able to make my way to the lobby. As it was 2am, the place was deserted as expected, but on the reception desk there was a sign with some phone numbers to ring in case of an emergency. I returned to my room, and the chaos in the next room escalated again – so I rang the number twice, but no answer. I tried one more time, and planned to phone the police if there was no answer. Eventually the manager/owner did answer. He seemed harassed that I had woken him. I explained who I was, what was happening in the next room and his response was –
‘What do you want me to do about it?’
I was absolutely gobsmacked. I told him to call the police, or I would do it for him. He replied –
‘You’re not going to call the police; I won’t let you. I don’t want you to cause trouble for me.’
I replied that if he didn’t - I would, and that he needed to either get someone to deal with it or to deal with it himself. He went to their room a few minutes later, shouted at them to get their things and leave. A further fight/screaming match erupted in the lobby over payment and refunds for the room (we could hear everything from our room) which were all refused, and they were forcibly ejected from the hotel – ten more minutes of screaming and banging around occurring from the carpark (also opposite our room) before they disappeared into the night.
It was awful, I’ve never felt so uncomfortable and unsafe in my life. We toyed with the idea of just leaving but as we were exhausted from all the drama and being so far from home, didn’t really have any alternative than to stay. Even though the manager knew it was me who had raised the concern and was subsequently in and out of the room affected next-door to ours for a good 20 minutes after the couple left, never once checked on us, apologised or anything like that. Based on how he spoke to me on the phone, I’m honestly unsurprised though.
We tried to sleep, but the double bed was like sleeping on a block of marble. Eventually, I slept on the floor which was an immediate improvement, and I drifted off right away. The room was airless and boiling, even though the heating was off. I could hear the guest above me urinating each time he used the bathroom. The next morning, we were exhausted, fatigued and honestly pretty annoyed. We left early, still no-one on the desk (this was around 9am) so dumped my key and walked out.
I appreciate that unruly guests aren’t a hotels fault – but the way the manager dealt with it, and treated guests who raised it was absolutely shocking. I can only imagine if it had been a young family or an elderly couple in our room instead of us – it would have been traumatising for them.
I will never return here in a million years. I whole-heartedly plead with anyone considering staying here to find an alternative! If you value your safety and don’t want to be belittled for raising a concern/asking for help - spend a bit more money on a room somewhere, it is not worth the...
Read moreI spoke to the manager by phone the morning of out arrival to confirm that we had booked three rooms for 5 guests, and that we could not share beds, as we are work colleagues. The rooms booked were a triple (for 2 people) a twin (for 2 people) and a double (for 1 person). All this was made entirely clear in the phone call. Our booking was made on the understanding that we would be arriving to check in between 11pm and midnight. As we were on our way, the manager phoned to ask where we were and why we had not checked in by 8pm. On arrival the manager was rude, surly and obstructive. After we checked in, we found we had been allocated 2 double rooms and one triple (set up for 2 people). When we pointed out (AGAIN) that we could not share beds, his only concern was that we should have checked in by 8pm (impossible owing to our work, and, as previously stated, our booking was made with the stipulation that we would be arriving between 11pm and midnight). He also claimed that I had told him that morning that 2 doubles and a triple (set up for 2 people) was what we needed, which is entirely untrue. When we suggested that we would be willing to split one of the double beds down into its two component singles and make up the two singles ourselves, he told us that was impossible as there was nobody there to do it and it was impossible for him to provide us with the required bedding. |Such a rude and obstructive person has no place working in hospitality. He makes Basil Fawlty look like Santa Claus. Avoid this appalling excuse...
