A group of six of us went here over the weekend to celebrate one friend's birthday. Firstly, the new decor is fantastic. Everything about the new design is classy and sophisticated, especially compared with what the Hardwick Arms looked like before the recent renovation. The service was also excellent and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food tasted amazing too; everything we ordered was delicious.
Now if you're rich and have a small appetite you can end the review there and call it 5 stars. For me, I'm always hungry and almost always on a limited budget, and this is where the 'Herd & Herb' fell down for our group. Starters are around £7 to £9 each. My wife had the duck leg and really enjoyed it, but two of us had the Caprese salad which was very stingy on both cheese and tomato (the latter we couldn't understand as surely that's very cheap?). The mains were mostly around £18 to £25. Again they tasted great and were wonderfully presented, but the portion size needed to be at least doubled to count for a main meal in my book. The deserts were more reasonable, both in price and size, but not enough to redeem the meal as a whole.
We paid about £230 for six people (including some drinks and the tip though), so if £40 a head is ok with you and you're not particularly hungry then you'll probably really enjoy your meal here. As it was we all stopped at Pizza Castle on the way home for a Hobbit-esque...
Read morePleasantly surprised. We were not sure what to expect as we booked without seeking any review or recommendation on this occasion The restaurant was reasonably busy for a Wednesday evening. The menu was varied and the food was of a high standard. I have no comment about wine as the majority were driving that night. A starter of ham hock terrine commenced the evening. The mushroom pithivier was a little on the small side but overall went down extremely well. I was therefore the first to finish the main course and so I hovered around my wife’s plate hoping for some of her chicken..... it was too good and so nothing was coming my way. Others had chicken or a steak and the consensus was that the restaurant is well and truly on our ‘list’ and we will frequent again. Staff were busy and we never had to ask twice for anything they were attentive with a good sense of humour. I recommend that you don’t hesitate to pay a visit. I am confident that you will not be...
Read moreWe have had so many lovely meals here and was so looking forward to our Sunday lunch yesterday. Unfortunately it was a totally different experience to what we are used to. We waited about 15 minutes just to be offered a drink. The soup tasted really nice , but was Luke warm and there was no butter with the bread. The dinners arrived and we were offered no sauces , but I requested some mint sauce , half way through my meal and it still hadn’t arrived , so when our 2nd round of drinks arrived I had to ask again. The Yorkshire puddings looked good , but were burnt , so didn’t actually taste great. There was no check back whilst we were eating , so we didn’t really get a chance to mention any of this. My son was treating us and paid the bill , which was not cheap and included a service charge which he didn’t notice. The manager was not present and wondered if this was why we appeared to be in a completely...
