Disappointing Stay in Padstow From the moment we arrived, alarm bells started ringing. Payment was required upfront at check-in, which already felt off. The entrance was shabby, with a chunk of the wall missing, and the entire place reeked of a horrible, mildewy smell. The corridors were an absolute disgrace, with filthy, sticky carpets setting the tone for the rest of the stay. In the room, things only got worse: a broken window, a rusty, grimy radiator, and a shower that was moldy with a broken hose. Even the soap dispensers were dirty. The carpet in the room was sticky and clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly. The evening bar (directly underneath us) turned into a noisy nightmare, with loud music which turned into a lock-in that went on late into the night. The paper-thin walls and lack of double glazing meant we heard everything: people talking loudly on the street, guests leaving the lock-in, and morning deliveries. Sleep was almost impossible. To make matters worse, the lights went out in the night, leaving us to navigate to the toilet in complete darkness. When I mentioned this to the bartender the following morning, she casually explained it was because of the dishwasher and that everyone was affected—not just us. This kind of disregard for basic guest comfort was shocking. Some might overlook these issues or interpret them differently, but for us, it was deeply upsetting and left a horrible impression of Padstow. This property is doing the area no favors. Without serious investment in maintenance and upkeep, we can’t recommend staying here.

The London Inn is a smaller community pub in the heart of Padstow, a few minutes walk from the harbour. The inside is split into several small rooms, evidence of the historic architecture of the building. The bar, too, is on the small side but offers a fair range of real ale ales and lagers, including a selection from St. Austell Brewery. To the back you'll find a small beer garden on an elevated wooden platform, clearly an afterthought. The stairs to the platform are very narrow and rather steep, which could be problematic for smaller children (a sign at the bottom of the stairs advises parents to take them by the hand). The whole construction has a somewhat appealingly cramped, intimate feel to it, an impression only reinforced by the proximity of adjacent buildings - the high wooden walls around the platform preclude nosey looks though. Neither the beer garden nor the pub itself are suitable for larger groups. Considering the many other options in close proximity to the London Inn, I'd say this is a nice, middle of the road choice, not especially a first one for beer lovers (You can get St. Austell brews practically everywhere in the neighbourhood). But it does have some charm. Beer prices are on the same, slightly elevated level that's characteristic for a touristy place like Padstow.

First time visitor to Padstow and always wary of the classic tourist trap eateries where quality is suspect and cost high. The London Inn caught my eye as we walked a little further back from the harbour and with a slightly more unique menu and what looked to be a more localish clientele, that attracted me. The ale selection is very good - mainly St Austell fayre and pint of Proper Job went down very well indeed. Our chosen food was the fish & chips and rump steak - both of which arrived in around 10 mins, served on hot plates and were superb. 'Proper chips' as described were exactly that, plentiful and tasty, the mushy peas were optioned for a side salad that wasn't just an afterthought, again plentiful and contained radish and mixed leaf. A nice juicy medium cooked steak with flavour, topped with onions and a good quantity of mushrooms, tomatos and those fab chips! Service was equally good - attentive, warm and sincere which is great to receive. Check back on the food timed well too. Prices very reasonable given the location and excellent quality all round. 10/10!

I think, like all places in Cornwall, The London Inn is suffering from a shortage of staff, coupled with the cost of living crisis which inevitably means that there’s less money to pay those staff/buy ingredients etc. Our room “Clipper” looked lovely, spacious and at first glance seemed good. But, the carpet was filthy, I don’t think it had seen a vacuum cleaner since the last guests had left, the toilet was dirty so I set about cleaning it with loo brush (not something you really want to do at the start of your stay), there was an empty hairspray container on the window sill and an empty cap from something else on the dressing table. The tea bags were very stale (didn’t try the coffee) and the carpets on the stairs and hallway were really filthy, probably in need of a good industrial clean as opposed to a vacuum. Our friends stayed in another room so I can’t comment on that one. All four of us had an evening meal and a breakfast. The breakfast was good, served promptly and good sized portions. The evening meal was okay. The starters (mackerel pate, chicken wings and salt and pepper calamari with curried mayonnaise) were very good. The mains were not so good. The Butchers sausages were pretty tasteless, the sweet potato curry with prawns and fish and rice had no sweet potatoes and was probably the worst curry I’ve had in a long time - I couldn’t eat it all as it just wasn’t very nice. The battered cod and chips were ok. The only saving grace for this place is the staff, they all work really hard, are always smiling and obviously trying to do their every best in hard times. I’m saddened to have to write an average review but hopefully the staff (who were delightful) will...
