This was our first visit since the pub management changed. Thought we would try it taking my mother for Sunday lunch seeing as we were in the area and the food used to be excellent.
My wife had the prawns to start. Safe option as these can't really be spoilt and she did say they wer nice. Could have done with a bigger plate or a dish to put the shells in and also could have done with serviettes or napkins to wipe fingers on.
I had the Brixham pate which was ok (had worse but definately have had better). Why do pubs insist on serving food on things other than plates? My starter was served on what only could have been described as a slice of a log. How do they clean this especially in these circumstances with covid?
We asked if the beef was pink. The waitress said she didn't think so but went to ask. She came back saying they can do it pink so we both went for the beef. The beef definately was not pink but well done. It was also stringy. The roast potatoes were soggy. The carrots were underdone (I hate over cooked veg but these were too underdone), the cabbage overcooked, the cauliflower cheese did not have any flavour (lacked cheese)and the gravy was watery and taseless. It also said on the menu that the meals came with spicy red cabbage but that was missing When asked, the waitress said "Oh, it's not there".
My mother had the chicken. Said the chicken was a bit dry but not too bad and obviously the same issues with the veg as we did.
Overall, it was a very disappointing meal especially as we thought the previous standard of food may have been upheld. Needless to say, we will not be returning unless something is done about the...
Read moreWasn't able to sample the Old Kings Head properly as were told we would have to wait 55 minutes for food - in a completely deserted pub! Would have hoped to have been offered something simple (ploughman's, sandwiches, omelette) if the kitchen was preparing for a busy lunch service. Went to pub in West Haddon instead, which was cracking. It's first impressions like these that cost businesses money - we were strangers, but are moving to Long Buckby soon and now we're certainly not going to be regulars here!
Update: No improvement. I went for a roast with family. It was okay but nothing special and took ages to arrive. Member of staff swore loudly to herself when there was a four year old at the table (I'm not saying people shouldn't swear in a pub just that staff should wait until there's no kids about!)
Update 2: Walked all the way up there to eat and was told there was no food in a very direct manner. There's training your staff to pull pints and take orders and then there's training them to be polite, second part doesn't seem to...
Read moreWhat a disappointment. Looking forward to celebrating my husbands birthday & Sunday roast used to be gorgeous but our meal today was anything but. Where do I begin! No vegetarian roast & only red meat options & the lamb was a lamb steak not roast lamb. Small portions, potatoes dry & quite tasteless & vegetables that you would not normally put with a roast. Mange tout & sweet corn?!! The waitress did not ask us if we wanted sauces etc & when we asked for horse radish we were told they had run out earlier. How earlier as they were not overly busy & if you knew you had run out why hadn’t someone popped down to the supermarket which is 5 minutes away? As lovely as the staff are they are completely clueless. Slow bar service & as there were 5 of us, not couples, we requested an itemised bill but none of the bar staff could work out how to do this. In the end I paid for all of us as it was easier but we still don’t know if we paid the correct amount. Please up your game Kings Head as we would hate to lose you from...
