Having visited this particular branch of the wetherspoons chain several times alone and, a few times accompanied with a friend, I have on the whole had a positive experience when ordering drinks, ordering food, eating food and politely socialising with the patrons within this establishment.
As a travelling electrician who works all across the UK and abroad, accomadated in hotels, air B&B's and holiday cottages I have visited dozens of different wetherspoon public houses.
This week alone I have eaten in three wetherspoon public houses, one in South East London, one in Tonbridge Kent and The Saracens Head in Daventry. My experience this evening at The Saracens Head Inn at Daventry was traumatic. I will explain below the reasons why I found this occasion at 19:00 hrs to be such a negative experience.
Having arrived with a friend to the bar, my friend purchased drinks for us both and whilst the drinks were being poured, I politely notified to my friend that I was going to the water closet in the gentlemans toilets. I used a urinal and then I washed my hands. At the moment I began washing and drying my hands a lady member of the bar staff entered the gentlemans toilets.
Politely (and confused) I asked the young lady if she had accidentally entered the men's toilets. Awkwardly, the lady asserted to me that she had been instructed by the bar manager (description - 6ft 2" bald headed, bearded, aggressive man of approximately 38-42 years old) to carry out what the young lady described as a "toilet check".
I conversed with the young lady (approx 25 years old brunette) whilst I used the hand dryer. The lady reiterated that her manager had sent her to do a "toilet check" in the men's toilets at 19:00 hrs on a Friday evening. The lady appeared to think that it was normal to just walk in to the men's toilets. I was offended by her presence.
Upon my assertive questioning of the bar manager I was told by him the following,
"If I don't like it then go and drink somewhere else".
I find this highly aggressive, highly inappropriate and on several levels this experience is bordering on unlawful behaviour.
I ask the reader, do male members of staff do "toilet checks" in the ladies toilets? I am offended by what occured in The Saracens Head and I am notifying the police that female members of staff are being delegated the task of performing "toilet checks" in the men's toilet.
I am of the observation that this us an illegal activity. I will be visiting the Saracens Head Inn again and I will be accompanied with a large group. In my humble opinion the manager would perhaps benefit by being reminded of simple etiquette and political correctness and we will perform that...
Read moreI visited Wetherspoons in Daventry this week with an old school friend. Having lived in Daventry for 60 years I had seen a few changes but none as bad as this. The service at the bar was incredibly slow, there were few tables available that had been cleared, and sbout 30 that hadn’t- this was Wednesday 11.30am , it hadn’t even reached lunchtime! Our meal took a while which was only panini so should have taken 5 minutes. Halfway through my visit I needed to use the bathroom. After struggling up the stairs, I got to the toilets. Out of those that were there….wait for it,… one never actually had a toilet in it, and from the rest, only one had a toilet roll. This is unacceptable.. When I returned to my table I saw an elderly gentleman who told a member of staff that he was still waiting for his chips. She denied he’d ordered them but he said he’d paid for some, she went away, returning with a bowl of chips10 mins later I fear l this pub is going downhill fast and although I no longer live in Daventry there are few welcoming pubs in the town centre to eat so Wetherspoons has to be a main choice. I’m 100% sure this is mainly through lack of staff and I’m sure they do their best but something needs to...
Read moreMy husband went there this morning for some breakfast and was spoken to like a piece of *@&! by the member of staff working the bar, a young girl who obviously has no experience with customer service. My husband has been eating there for years and orders a full English but with vegetarian sausage instead, he just prefers them. It's never been a problem in past until today. He went to the till to order his usual breakfast and was asked why didn't he just have a vegetarian breakfast? He replied because I would still like the bacon etc and just prefers the taste of the vegetarian sausages. Reasonable I think. He was told by the member of staff that the kitchen was too busy to change the sausages and it couldn't be done. Too busy? Too busy to change some preheated sauages from meat to vegetarian? Really? When my husband questioned this and he was abruptly told that the kitchen was too busy and couldn't swap the sausages. Luckily, my husband held his tongue at the rude attitude he received and paid for the breakfast. I know you get what you pay for there but rudeness from staff is not...
