I very rarely give bad reviews, but I feel this needs one. We called in for lunch. I decided I would have the steak & ale pie which came with mashed potato and mixed veg. I said to the barmaid I didn't want the veg, I then asked if I could swap the mashed potatoes for chips. She said, "That's no problem, but that would be an extra cost of £3.30." I said, "Hang on, I dont want veg, which is fair enough, but you want to charge me to swap mash for chips?" She said, "Yes, but as I say, the chips will be £3.30 extra." So, the steak & ale pie with mashed potato and mixed veg was £11.20. Therefore, in theory, because I just wanted to change mashed potato for chips, the £11.20 steak & ale pie suddenly becomes £14.50. £3.30 for a few frozen chips. Because I didn't want the veg, I fully understand and wouldn't expect any reduction in price as that is my choice, but to say they can swap mash for chips, but there will be an extra £3.30 cost i find very difficult to comprehend. Even Wetherspoons are happy to swap items without charging extra. I have eaten at many restaurants, bars, and cafés, and I have never ever come across this before. I find this a very, very strange policy. For this reason, I very much doubt I will be frequenting this...
Read moreMy son's booked a table for 11 people for their dad's birthday, as they booked at the beginning of the week I was surprised when we were told our table was at the other side of the pub and not in the conservatory. The table was in the window with the sun blazing through, not to mention it' hard to eat your dinner sat on a couch when you can't reach the table. Not all the party could fit round the table so a few of us had to sit at another table. We went to get our meal from the carvery , bowls needed replenishing and the chef couldn't cut the meat, by the time the last of us got our food the first had nearly finished. The plates were left on the table for at least half an hour and the other table was longer. Some of the party had to leave because it was just to hot in the window seat, they went to pay for their meal and the girl wearing glasses didn't know what she was doing, 2 more people went to pay and she charged them for all the 11 meals. I enjoyed my meal, because I got mine last and everything was hot, but the majority of our party did not. No body came to ask us if we wanted desert I am afraid it will be a long time before I would go again or recomended it to friends very...
Read moreWent here yesterday for lunch as a last minute decision. What can I say, we were given a warm welcome, pointed out to the meals of the day. I chose the pie of the day, which was steak and ale. I was not let down. the steak was succulent and tender and the gravy was tasty. The pie top was my favourite ..suet. The ships were home made and very tasty and the veg were cooked to perfection. My partner chose a cheese and bacon toastie which he thoroughly enjoyed and came which ships and side salad. He said the dressing complimented the dish. The meals arrived very hot and the portion sizes are huge. I have a good appetite and struggled to eat it all. I would highly recommend The South Lodge. My dad struggles to eat a large portion, not sure if they did do a smaller meal for those who would struggle, this may be a good idea if not. They were just trying a new sizzler menu, whilst we were there.. prawn, mushroom, onion and peppers on skewer's with garlic butter. They smelt gorgeous and may try them on my next...
