Isn't it strange how one day can vary from the next. I know Sunninghill/Ascot/Sunningdale like the back of my hand, I grew up here, and when I find myself in Sunninghill pop into the Sun Cafe if the moment takes me and thus far have always come away feeling satisfied with the service and quality of product. Not so today. Tables were taken up with gentle folk of a certain age, long consumed token purchases of coffee or tea in front of them, which then entitled them I guess to linger at length reading their Sun, or Express….I think one elderly individual had something resembling a book to while away the hours and remove the need to return home. We ordered coffee, and a doughnut. Bland faced service without a smile by indifferent individual, top end prices for poor coffee……we tried the doughnut, the jam variety and decided not to risk a further nibble of this stale tired variety of the traditional variety which often has runny jam and a smell of just baked…..this was vile bottom of the end LCD fodder accompanied with dishwater coffee and not cheap. I do not mind paying top end for quality or middle end for middle quality, I resent paying high end for low end quality. I returned the doughnut saying it was stale and not of good quality. Blank faced person poked at it. I returned to my table and finished the …whatever it was in my cup and left. Some interaction from the staff might have curtailed the necessity for me to write this critique. Sadly, and as ever in this self obsessed area of Berkshire which was once so pleasant and humble, nothing, not even a farewell, not a sorry, not a glimmer of interest……fine….result, this critique, resolution never to use this bistro again….ever….and to mention in passing to the many many friends I have in this area, how Sun Cafe appears to have lost its way and joined the ranks of the other second rate establishments which are all too frequent and...
Read moreThe Hong Kong food was nice ish but expensive for what they served, and the portion sizes were small. The beef noodles were £13 which is £3 more expensive than in central London Chinatown (hand pulled noodles). Also, the meat in the clear brisket soup noodles had no flavour. The salted preserved veg and shredded pork small portion was a joke at £9.50. It's less than a starter size with 2 spoons full of topping. It is just about nice if you are not far but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. I so wanted to support this independent Hong Kong cafe outside of London, but the price and portion size made me feel a bit scammed and deter me from visiting again. It's such a shame as there are better and more value for money places at similar distances. Also, my wife's order was forgotten, so 3 of us ate and had to chase for hers. I have considered leaving a slightly better review as I appreciate what review does to someone's business, but the more I thought about it, the more angry I got. This is the 3rd time I edited this one review, and it got worse every time. They need to understand that competitions are better m, so they must not take a micky with their customers, which, unfortunately, I think they are, hence I won't be back. The good thing is the free parking and the pork belly was actually nice, if there was more in...
Read moreUpon entry, I was served reasonably quickly by the staff. I ordered a flat white and a sausage baguette. I then went and found a table fairly quickly.
The flat white was distinctly average, nothing bad, nothing good but adequate. Sadly, the sausage baguette left a lot to be desired. The bread was doughy and seemed to be either a very cheap baguette, or a part bake that hadn’t been cooked properly. But the most disappointing thing was the sausage in it or lack of should I say. There was only one sausage sliced down the middle in the whole baguette. Not exactly what I call a decent portion and certainly not worth the money I paid for it.
I certainly won’t be going back again as this is the second disappointing trip I’ve had in recent times. Which is a real shame as it used to be an excellent...
