Review Waterford arms. Review for dining only. Nice decor in keeping with the age of the pub. Nice wooden flooring. No hand pull beers unfortunately. We were advised the ovens were out of order so only fish and chips were being served. It suited us. However the Food was pretty good and certainly good value. Don’t think you can buy fish and chips cheaper than this. I opted for the Large fish n chips (there is the choice of small £11, regular £13 and large £15) there is also the Whale and chips option at £28, but it looks beyond my appetite. Our order arrived promptly, which was better than some reviews indicated. Initially the restaurant was quite busy, but by the time we left there were only two or three tables occupied in the main dining area. I’m sorry to say the let down was the service. Good to start with, but when they cleared our plates we placed a drinks order. After 10 minutes we had to attract their attention as they were all busy huddled in a group and texting on their mobiles, I presume as it had quietened down a bit they took their eye off the ball. Same happened when we asked for the bill. One more bad thing, was being in the toilets and seeing one of the chefs enter one of the cubicles and leave a few minutes after without washing his hands. Whatever the washing facilities in the kitchen, that doesn’t look good!

My husband and I have just got back from a very enjoyable weekend at this hotel. I can’t recommend it enough. On arrival Saturday afternoon we were greeted by a lovely young lad who checked us in, took us to our room- offering to carry our bags! He made sure the room was ok (it was perfect!) and wished us a pleasant stay. In the morning the chef (lovely lady!) had laid on the most beautiful breakfast- taking into consideration most of the guests were there for the GNR! It was delicious! On our return- having been caught for hours in the terrible floods in Newcastle we sadly found the kitchen closed- despite this the wonderful male chef offered us a wide variety of sandwiches- he didn’t need to do this- the drowned cold rats we were are forever grateful! Again- delicious food! All the girls on the bar went out of their way to check we were ok- wishing hubby well on his run and checking we got back safely after the floods. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone. It’s outstanding! This was our second visit for the GNR and it won’t be our last- next time it will be to enjoy yhe gorgeous location! See you soon Mr & Mrs wiseman (room 5!)

Might have been a bad day at the office but not sure what the hype is after having read some really good reviews. Booking for 3 adults 2 children (2&7)12:00 on Sunday 27th Oct.

We initially wanted to come for the seafood platter, however, this was unavailable on a Sunday which can't be helped. We opted for 2 Sunday lunches, 1 salmon, and a sausage and mash. All of the veg that was served with the mains was luke warm at best, the Yorkshire pudding with one of the mains was burnt, the mash was lumpy, the roasts were in my opinion inedible (hard and dry on the inside and the skin was tough and soggy as if cooked from frozen or reheated), no cutlery was given, the salmon was swimming in a sauce almost as if it were a soup (could be preference but not how I would serve it personally). We were asked twice if everything was OK and we said unfortunately not and specified why. The service stated that they check on this for us but nothing was mentioned or escalated and we paid full price for all meals.

We would have returned to try the seafood platter (as we've heard good things) if some effort was made to potentially refund part of the meals but no effort was made to rectify this.

In addition to this we had to wipe down our table, seats and high chair as they were dusty and unclean. The gents toilets were very unclean also.

We went to an Italian chain restaurant the week before and the food was far superior and better value for money.

Overall, quite disappointing given the reputation from...

The quality of the food saved it. We visited today after hearing for a long time that it did the best fish and chips. We entered the restaurant area to be told rather bruskly that it was full and we should go to the bar which we did and every table was empty and only one did not have a reserved sign on it. We sat at that. The room felt old and stale and not inviting. There were regulars sitting at the bar which as well as chatting to the staff made it difficult to get to the bar to place our order. We ordered fish and chips for 2 which were very reasonably priced and included bread and butter and tea. Despite the bar being empty ie no one coming in to sit at reserved tables the food took 30mins to arrive. When it did we realised we had no cutlery I had to go to restsurant to ask for it and it was thurst at me with out a word. I then realised we had not got the bread and again my request was treated as an irritation. When the Happy waitress brought the bread it was thrust over the barrier separating the upper level from the lower level. We then found that the vinegar and salt containers were both empty. I swopped theses with another table as did not want to inconvenience the blonde waitress again. I have to say the dark haired lady who took our order and money was excellent. By the time we left the reserved tables all remained empty. If you want nice fish and chips at reasonable price and not concerned about ambiance staff and standards then you won't be...

After booking a table for 1pm we arrived at 12 .55.....we were shown to our table. After 5 mins a young guy came to take the drinks order and was informed over 2hat we were wanting to order. At 1.30 I asked a member of the young staff team was our food going to be very much longer !! This young girl informed us that they were busy and shouldn't be much longer and then rolled her eyes . At 1 .55 the table next to us made a remark saying that they couldn't believe the length of time we had been sat without food being served to us as walk ins had been served their food the time we had been left sitting. My 7 year old grandson by this time was informing his parents that his tummy hurt as he was hungry . As staff were clearing a table I asked again about our order !! We couldn't beleave the response ( well as you've ordered the whale cod we are waiting to wash a plate !! By this time we had been sitting over a hour ..... 10 mins later the meal came ..... The cod looked and tasted lovely ... However the chips had clearly Been doubled cook as were hard and really dry ,the sauces , gravy, peas, curry, and tomato sauce pots were only quarter full. At no point did any staff member come to our table to even apologise for our wait or even let us know how much longer we would have to wait ...... would I recommend to my friends and...
