I've been here a few times over the years I've visited Swanage, but this was a poor experience. It's slap bang in the middle of the tourist area, but when we visited it was pretty poor. I've never seen anyone pour a pint of Guinness in one go without letting it settle for a while! There was no real ale available just a lot of cider! The person serving had no idea of the bar snacks available and didn't seem particularly bothered either. The place could do with a good clean and tidy - we went and drank in the garden and it wasn't much better. Really disappointing - let's hope it was a bad day and it improves. I'll think twice about visiting again!

So disappointing. For many years I loved eating here, the food used to be superb. Based on two recent experiences, it isn't any more. What's worse, the service is no better than the food and generally it's has declined. I shan't eat here again unless I want ping food that doesn't taste good. Now, nothing to do with the White Swan, but made me smile.... A termite walks into a pub. He grabs a seat and looks at the person behind the bar and asks "is the bar tender here?"

A basic pub, needs a general update of furniture and decor, looks tired and down at heel. That said, the staff were very welcoming, the food was excellent. Sunday roast (pork) was piping hot, very generously portioned and served with crisp roast potatoes, red cabbage, carrots, peas, Yorkshire pudding, the whole served in a rich gravy. I was full so didn't ask about dessert.

We were a group of ten, asked they could accommodate us to eat, told yes but they were busy and there was a 45 minute wait for food. That was fine so we ordered and sat with a drink to chat and wait. After an hour still no food so enquired and we're gruffly told that they're busy and it's coming next. Again, that was fine. I've worked in hospitality and fully appreciate how stressful it can be, especially as a waitress who knows when some chefs say 1 minutes they mean 20. Food arrived after 90 mins. Mostly ok. Steak didn't come with advertised trimmings, just chips and peas, but again we thought we'd just eat and say nothing as they were busy. Steak itself was good. All other meals arrived apart from one. We waited 5 mins and then asked was there a hold up? Waitress went to check and the kitchen had missed one off the order, no real apology, just a they are doing it now. Fair enough. It happens. Son was happy nicking our chips while waiting for his Hunters Chicken so no harm done. It arrived after about 10 minutes. Slightly disappointing. A chicken breast, sliced, with a piece of bacon in the middle, skewered together, with some cheese on top. No BBQ sauce, which is surely what makes Hunters Chicken what it is. By then we just couldn't be bothered, everyone else was midway through their meal and to be honest we didn't want to send it back and wait another 10 minutes to get it sorted. Everyone ate, meals were ok, fish and chips very good in fact so not all bad. Decided to skip pudding and get ice creams elsewhere. Went to pay. Bill was 135 quid. Asked if we could pay 100 quid cash and the rest card. Lady behind the bar just gave us a very confused look, told us she didn't know how to work the till, she said she was tired as she had just driven from Wales and wasn't expecting to be working in a bar today....not really my problem. Another member of staff came and sorted our payments. Good job I think we didn't all ask the pay separately...think that would have really put a spanner in the works. We went in as it looked like a nice traditional pub, the boys enjoyed a game of pool while waiting and apart from the steak lacking in trimmings and the Hunters Gone Home chicken, but the customer service skills definitely need some improvement. A disappointing visit, might have been a bad day for them, I will admit it was busy, but at a holiday spot in August I'd expect more organisation, especially if they want the trade and the...

AN APPALLING EXPERIENCE.

This is the worst pub meal experience I’ve ever had. My son, myself and 3 friends went in for food after an 18 mile coastal walk. We were tired and hungry and would have eaten virtually anything. The bar staff didn’t look you in the eye when they served you. They couldn’t pour a pint without a big head and then spilling it.

We sat at a blue table which was sticky to the touch.

We ordered two roasts, two Mac and cheese and chicken curry and chips. The Mac and cheese were incredibly bland and the garlic bread had large bits of chopped, uncooked garlic on it. Then one roast arrived - small, not much veg, no offer of sauce for the meat. Then two meals arrived that we hadn’t ordered. We quickly established that they were for the table next to ours. Rather than taking them over to them, they went off to argue with themselves about whose fault it was, leaving the meals we didn’t order on our table. They walked past several times ignoring us and looking angry and annoyed. I held up the mac and cheese for them to take, which they did, but didn’t take the roast, for some reason. We moved it up the table.

My son’s roast arrived. 1 long piece of lamb. No mint sauce bought or offered. He was starving and ate it with grim determination.

By the time my chicken ‘curry’ arrived, my three friends had left, leaving just my son and I. The chicken ‘curry’: pale and looked like cat sick. I was starving so tried to eat a few mouthfuls but could not do it. I asked the staff in what way it was a curry since there was no cumin, coriander, turmeric, etc in the meal? He looked defeated and asked how he could make it better. After some pretty embarrassing customer interaction, eg he said, “But was your Madri alright?” (it was actually a pint of lager shandy, but he seemed to want to take credit for them pouring it in the glass) I had to ask to speak to someone else as he was not prepared to refund both meals as my son had actually eaten his.

In the end, both meals were refunded to compensate for the appalling food and experience.

The cold roast mistakenly given to us earlier remained on the table…

We’re not complainers, as a rule, but this was an appalling meal, at an unhygienic pub, with poorly skilled, trained staff who made no effort to welcome us or make this a...

We went into the pub today for some food after going in in the evenings listening to music. So when we order we weren't told of any delay or problems. The girl in the kitchen was ringing the bell for food to be taken out to customers but landlady was too busy chatting and drinking with some men at the bar. So when the girl came out and said she didn't know where they were to go the L/L said either in the garden or down here, the poor girl said she was trying to cook other meals to which the L/L replied don't cry just do it. A table of 4 next to us gasped just like we did, then the drunk man who was talking to the L/L went in the kitchen and brought food out to the table of 4, that wasn't theirs, this food then got took to the garden. One meal for the table of 4 appeared then after this was finished another one appeared, then after about 10min the L/L asked them what they were waiting for, then a further 10mins another one came out. My partner then got his meal 40 mins after ordering. The L/L then asked the table of 4 again what were they waiting for, they told her and it came out 12-15mins later. Then finally mine arrived after my partner had finished his food and about 55/60mins after ordering.. Then as if that wasn't bad enough the L/L continued to slate the poor girl in the kitchen to other customers, no empathy to the poor girl who isnt kitchen trained and only stepped in to help out as chef had jacked his job earlier the same day. This land lady has absolutely no empathy or any idea how to treat staff or customers. And being drunk behind the bar really wasn't the best look for an obviously over...
