Location is interesting, and you can get here by ferry from Gravesend which makes for a quirky sort of outing if you're into that kind of thing. The pub itself is very much a local's sort of pub, the clientele being largely old geezers, of presumably Essex / East End of London extraction. Food was straightforward honest pub grub, nothing pretentious. Some bits of the decor were slightly baffling, and it seemed a bit sanitised in places, but the corner where the pool table is had some character to it. The clapboard exterior was also pleasant enough to look at.
It happened there was an American lady with her kids here while I was there and I was initially a bit concerned this could be a recipe for disaster in this sort of setting, but was impressed by how hospitable and friendly the barman was to her. Obviously that is just as it should be, but we've all been a fly on the wall to scenarios where it doesn't pan out like that. Might have just given it 3 stars otherwise, but I felt they deserved a...

Read moreToday we used this property twice whilst visiting the area of The Thames River. The plus would be free parking and the convenience of the pub in relation to this. At around 12pm we had a couple of drinks and snacks. The pub itself is very tired and dated. The staff member was polite but seemed bored. After our return from our long walk we thought we'd have a drink, use the facilities and make the 90 min journey home. We entered the bar which had become busier, mainly with families and lots of kids still in school clothes. That's fine, we went to the bar and were basically ignored. My partner needed to use the toilet and we agreed if we hadn't been served on her return we'd leave. Suffice to say we left drinkless. I would suggest you don't go out of your...
