Voted the best place for a sunday roast in Gravesend, which isn’t hard when the only competition is toby carvery. Unless you are friends with Dan, unfortunately its off to the bar with you to place your order! But not before having to elbow your way through the crowd! Be prepared to play a game of guess where i I am sitting with the staff when you order as no table number are provided! You would think that would be a basic requirement when you are made to order at the bar. The menu failed to specify that you could choose between a regular or large potion of roast dinner which is something that is handy to know if your not providing table service as you have to guess at the bar what size everyone in your party wants. The food was ok but nothing to write home about. The roast chicken came out looking grey an tasting very dry with a poor selection of vegetables. No offer of sauces was made, you have to make sure that you grab your waiter before he disappears and no follow up was made by staff to see how your meal is. Dessert was also a disappointment, when you label your dish as home made I don’t expect tinned fruit in my pie with soggy pastry. I assume the custard was ambrosia as that was the only decent part of the dessert along with the fresh strawberry...
Read moreVisited this pub for the first time, as it is featured in a book I have called Kent Smugglers' Pubs. It's right by the river and the pier where there is a ferry boat to Tilbury, but it doesn't run Sundays. We enjoyed Sunday Roast, and was pleased to see they have a vegetarian option of nut roast which was very tasty. There are also quite a few vegan meals available. My husband had the mixed roast which has a bit of lamb, beef and chicken, he went for the standard size, I had the small option.
This is a lovely old pub with plenty of character including wonky floors, and serves delicious food. They have quite a few ales which pleased my husband. We didn't get round to trying the puddings but plan to visit again to have the gipsy tart, vegan key lime pie or crumble.
The Saxon Shore Way starts in Gravesend so this is a handy place to eat before you start. The England Coast Path also goes along here, and there is another walk shown on a large board nearby. No smugglers' tunnels are available to see, but there might be historical guided tours of the town and riverside, I need to contact the Visitor Information Centre.
We parked in a local council carpark which is...
Read moreI’ve lived 50m from the Three Daws for almost 26 years and I have spent s lot of money there during those years, both on meals and drinks. Last night, upon returning from a wedding, I thought I’d pop in for a quick drink and see who was there. I accept it was late when I got there (23.45) but there were quite a few people there and an event going on downstairs. People were being served at the bar. I waited patiently to place my order when the barman asked me if I had just arrived. I said that I had, having just got back from a wedding (I was dressed in a 3 piece suit). He said that he was unable to serve me as I’d arrived too late! Despite other patrons at the bar telling him he was being unreasonable, he refused to serve me. This is the first time I’ve suffered such an embarrassment in Gravesend and, as sad as it makes me, if my cash isn’t good enough at a quarter to midnight on a Friday, then I won’t allow any more of it to cross the bar ever again. You’ve just lost a...
