For an Indian restaurant the food was 'ok' nothing special peshwari naan had almost no filling so tasted like plain naan. Portions on the small side but ok. Poppadoms £0.95 each and for a table of 6 had just 1 set of dips.
The guy who set us at our table was friendly. Our server however clearly didn't want to be there maybe it was a bad day though, I mean nobody wants to have to work I get it and I don't expect service with a smile. But, ordered a jug of water for the table we got 2 glasses for a table of 6 asked for more they gave a single glass of water. We asked for glasses for everyone they never turned up. One person's beer didn't arrive either and we had to remind them after the Poppadoms. Other issues but don't want to get into everything.
The waiting times for food, service and drinks was good. They looked quite busy yet we did feel we got our food promptly.
As for the restaurant, it did appear clean, I do note yes there was a fly that landed on the table but it's a restaurant and it's summer that's going to happen. The table cloths, crockery etc were spotless.
The decor was interesting too quite liked the portraits.
The place did seem popular as there were birthday parties and mostly quite full on a Saturday but it was loud and sometimes hard to hear the other side of the table. The prices as a whole were not great but not awful so acceptable, a little steep but given the popularity I expect we had a bit of an off day.
Splitting the bill was a little more effort than other places, hand written receipts where items are grouped e.g. we had various drinks yet were grouped under 'drinks' so we just had to divide that 6 ways.
As for parking the high street has lots of spaces around and if in a pinch their is a car park in walking distance. The restaurant itself didn't have parking but this is because they don't need it.
This was just our experience visiting friends in the area and it was their first time eating here too, overall I give this experience a 3 star 'ok' I suspect maybe a bit of an off night. If in the area again I'd likely try some other places to compare with but I'd consider...
Read moreVisited by chance a couple of weeks ago and was so pleased we returned again today. This is a quintessential country town Indian restaurant - the decor and atmosphere are exactly as they should be- crisp white linens, red velveteen chairs, even a lovely fish tank. It’s comforting and timeless, exactly what you want and expect and the food is terrific, traditional British Indian food done very nicely. It was quite busy and so was quite loud, with a couple of large parties. The waiters are really hard working, unobtrusive and very polite, and managed to bring out our food very promptly ecpisally considering the two large parties who ordered just after we arrived. . The drinks are cold and fresh, the poppadums are crispy and delicious and the pickle selection is a treat especially the red sweet chilli and the yoghurt dips. I had a fabulous onion bhaji starter (gigantic crispy golden thing of beauty) and we also tried the chicken pakora which were as good as they get outside Glasgow ;)
I had a lovely succulent tandoori chicken and a fragrant and tasty sag aloo for my main - I couldn’t finish it but was able to bring back a takeout! Also had one of the house specials (deshi?) which was again very flavourful and warming. The bill was extremely reasonable for the quality and quantity of food and I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who wants a “really good curry” to try the Tudor Raj. Finally thank you for the lovely touch of a single red rose as a parting...
Read moreGave us the popadoms, left us hanging for at least a half hour, had to go up and ask for service, they came, took the order, another twenty minutes past, then the food came, not bad, but they were heating it up on a camp stove on their service trolly. We finished our meal, asked for the bill, they brought an utterly indecipherable itemised bill to the table, we worked as per their menu prices and were still about thirty pounds short on the bill, which they got very salty about, seemed like they had just tagged some extra on for themselves to us but after a salty exchange we just divided up the excess and paid, there was no attempt to explain the pricing and they simply told us they only do a table total, not an itemised bill. A lime and soda will cost you £4.95 though I can tell you that for nothing. Poor service, poor attitude, bad prices and dodgy billing....
