Staying in nearby campsite and after searching on Internet for a place to eat on a Saturday evening we found Valentine's restaurant, after reading some of the good reviews, we thought we would give it a try, l liked the fact that the restaurant had some gluten free options on the menu as my husband is coeliac so has to have gluten free. We were welcomed by the owner /manager not sure to be honest & two waitresses the restaurant was nicely decorated and had a nice relaxing feel was only few people in but we did book for 6.15 so still early, but as the evening went on did become busy and the 2 waitresses looked rushed off their feet. I ordered beef & ale pie off the specials board and my husband had gluten free chicken in garlic sauce off the specials board too, didn't wait long for the food, big portions well presented and delicious. I then ordered sticky toffee pudding and custard again very tasty. Would definitely visit again if visiting the area well...
Read moreValentines was a recommendation from the landlord of the B&B where we were staying. How right he was. From walking in un-reserved, to leaving; the entire experience was a masterclass in how a restaurant should operate.. The excellent and friendly waitress, welcomed us, showed us politely to a vacant table and explained the menu and specials board. There was an amazing choice of drinks and some cocktails, enough choice of meals without being overwhelming, and from our experience, each dish was quite generous, appeared to be freshly prepared and was delicious. The restaurant had covid required separating screens between the tables, and plenty of table cleaning between diners. On a very cold winter's, Wednesday evening, the meal was the highlight of our trip to Barnard Castle. I cannot recommend Valentines...
Read moreMyself and my boyfriend visited on a Saturday evening and overall had an ok experience. The customer service was fine and we both thought the belly pork was cooked very well (we both ordered it). Unfortunately I was disappointed with the plain, boiled vegetables and what I felt wasn't the most exciting menu. Additionally the cost of meals was, I felt slightly higher than I was expecting given the meal descriptions, quality of food and overall feel of the restaurant (which was distinctly mid to low range). Another reason for the low star rating is that we were charged £1.50 for tap water as I did not wish to buy an alcoholic drink. Having looked into this I am aware that this may not be illegal however I felt it was really disappointing particularly as we did not see the notice about this untill the end...
