I visited this cafe for the first time this afternoon and needless to say, I was highly disappointed by how poor the experience was and the appalling behaviour by the very few members of staff which were there.
The overall service was highly unprofessional, it's very evident that the staff need some serious training in appropriate customer service and put their energy into being a little more cheerful and friendly which is what we expect to see as customers (especially when it's our first time visiting) rather than belting out Amy Winehouse and Atomic Kitten embarrassingly loud for everyone to hear which quite frankly nobody particularly wants to have to put up with whilst trying to relax and enjoy what should be a calm, welcoming atmosphere especially as there's plenty of bars around that we would go to instead if we wanted that kind of entertainment.
There was several stained, marked seats and dirty tables with crumbs and stains all over them which could have easily been cleaned with a quick wipe over but instead the staff were stood around doing nothing and there was barely any customers in there at the time, they were too absorbed in talking the whole time and on their phones to put any effort into doing their job, they clearly didn't really value their job or want to be there. The teapot was also still stained around the spout.
For some reason, the cooker was turned off at barely 2pm when they shut at 4 pm so we had barely any choice of what to eat, there was just a very small selection of mediocre cakes, 1 pack of crisps or plain sandwiches.
A blonde woman with glasses was prancing around the cafe and singing very loudly to the music with no shame or care putting on a whole show like she was at a concert the whole time which was extremely offputting and frustrating and made us feel uncomfortable whilst we were trying to eat.
The food and prices were average quality, nothing special as obviously we didn't have anything interesting to eat as the cooker had been turned off so unnecessarily early, just some basic sandwiches, salad and crisps.
The black haired woman who served us didn't greet us too nicely, it seemed like she didn't want to be there as she wasn't the most welcoming, enthusiastic, friendly or professional, she was more bothered about what time she was going home.
The overall decor and aesthetic of the cafe was very well designed, fresh and modern despite how unhygienic it was which is no excuse as it was practically empty and the staff weren't busy whatsoever and seemingly more engaged in their conversation behind the counter rather than doing their job.
It's a shame I have to review so negatively as it's such a lovely place with complete wasted potential due to their terrible staff, I have never seen such appalling customer service and obviously a lot of work and improvement needs to be done (preferably getting a better, nicer group of staff), I certainly won't be returning and wouldn't this place...
Read moreEcho most of the previous reviews. Lovely cafe, in a great location. (Top of town, accessible for all the shops and market, and with most of the buses stopping straight outside.)
Its always looked popular, so when we went to go in midmorning on a Saturday we half expected to either be crammed in, or not find space for our buggy.
Luckily once inside its very open and spacious, they've resisted the urge to cram as many tables in as possible, so although there was only a 2 seater table free, we easily managed to pull up another seat, and slide the buggy in while leaving plenty of room all round for people to get past unrestricted. I hate being crammed in, and I hate feeling like we're in people's way, so this was a huge positive and allowed us to relax.
The menu didn't have a huge selection, but there was enough to provide a choice for most people, with a couple of specials, which providing they change pretty frequently should stop repeat visitors getting bored.
One recommendation I would suggest, that should be easy to implement is perhaps provide the option of baguettes to go alongside the bacon/sausage cobs etc, to appease people like me with bigger appetites!
The place was really clean, the wait to get served, and get our food and drinks was minimal.
The prices were very reasonable, but most importantly the food was delicious, seemed to be well cooked and of good quality ingredients.
A simple breakfast cob can so easily go from delicious to dire just by weather or not the cafe is willing to spend a little extra on better quality ingredients.
The staff we all lovely too, especially the young lady who brought out food to us, who seemed to genuinely make a fuss of the kiddies.
We definitely intend to make it a regular little trip before we do our shopping, alternating with another nice cafe we found at the other end of town. And we love the fact it isn't a chain either, feels like you're really supporting a...
Read moreNice new coffee shop in the main market place of Ilkeston. The decor is trendy and the facilities are new and clean. There is a disabled and a unisex toilet on site and there is table service from very friendly staff. Prices are equal to other drink and eats outlets in town. Very handy if waiting for buses. The biggest downer for me is the amount of condensation on the windows, it can't be a healthy atmosphere to sit in or work in. It's about time investment was made to double glazing to overcome the condensation. Wet on the windows dry on...
