I'm Never coming back this place ever again. This would be my 4th visits now and I can say this place is not an equal opportunities pub, no way is there any show of diversity with staff or patrons.
Upon my first visit around 2 yeas ago ( recommended by father in law) we came to sample the fish baskets.I am a massive seafood lover, if you pulled a boot out of the water as long as I saw a hook and line its seafood.
Well when we happened across this pub we tried the fish baskets which was out of this world along with the squid, I have raved about this place its food to all my friends and family and associates ever since.
My husband ordered for us that time. I came alone last year June just to visit the pub and take my small one on some sights, i was travelling from Hertfordhire just for the day so it's no mere 10 minute jaunt.
Upon entering I took a place at the bar and waited my turn, from a full bar of staff one by one the staff seemed to deplete leaving me waiting for ages but being purposely dismissed.Im not rude but in the end I had to call for some assistance. My little one had some cake which I must say was a huge portion and I my usual fish basket.
A year on with my family we have made our annual visit to Kent and to Dymchurch and to Ocean Inn.It wasn't busy, we had lost track of time so decided not to eat but grab a quick drink a few snacks let the kids play a while contemplating a return the next day for lunch and amusements.
We entered the pub and once again no greeting my husband ordered drinks and I had to tend 3 small ones so I was distracted.Hubby asked me to tell the lady behind the bar what I was drinking which I did and she blatantly ignored me and went back to my husband..who then in turn directed her back to me by saying that we were all together,I ordered my drink. Funny enough the place was struck again by the same disappearing staff
Same lady: I mentioned that when we leave we would come and get some cake to take away..once again I am dismissed and she looks to my husband who says exactly the same thing and the lady replies that it's not a problem and just do not before it gets busy. I come in less than an hour later to order the cakes and I'm met with little less than a frosty attitude.I ask how much of a cake is one portion..a second lady now chimes in and shows me.I say that i may want 2/3 portions of a cake if she just shows me how much one is I'd estimate from there..well i was asked how many people it was for and the exasperation in her voice was starting to annoy me by now, in fact the whole experience was just one passive aggressive non verbal insult upon insult.
Back to the cake: so the lady from the kitchen now tries to tell me that one portion was near half its normal size that not only have i seen but I have been served and I made a point of mentioning this.
So the portions changed and I bought 3 portions off 3 cakes at £45 in total.. By then I just didn't care..in the space of less than an hour we had spent £80. My husband couldnt believe what he was watching me experience.
It's been a long time since the 80s that I have felt like this and on reflection I always thought it was me that was reading too much into Things, was it because its so obvious that I am an out of towner or from my obvious look as a black woman or both that me and mine were not welcome Why not just put the signs back on the door The pub is dog friendly so just put No Blacks.
I am sick to my stomach and it upset me so much that I didn't even eat the cake nor much food that night. Asking myself why? Needless to say my husband says we are never going back there and quite obviously I will not recommend this place to anymore to friends or family or associates. Poor show on an amazing venue, with good food. My husband is Kent born and bred and was so embarrassed with the behaviour he stood and observed most of the time and said that we will never go back there, there are other places to go. They couldn't have made it anymore clearer that they didn't want to serve...
Read moreOrdered for my family, first time coming here today and my I ordered a roast dinner, a burger and chips and a kids nuggets and chips.
The food itself was pretty delightful it was hot and tasted fresh ( the chips were lovely tasted like a chip shop) my biggest disappointment was the fact that I had less chips on my plate than my sons meal which was nuggets and chips and the burger was obviously just a. Chef larder patty so very little or no authentic burger making at all just cheap and easy for them but noting that I expect far more for the value. I ended up buying two drinks of fizzy and a j20 and that came to over 12 quid just for 3 drinks it’s very very overpriced and it’s worth noting I saw a foreign family arrive and during this time
He wanted a water ( tap) and a sprite to which they had no sprite and asked if 7 up was fine? He said yeah that’s fine and she comes back with bottled water and a tiny mixer 7 up can and charged them full price this place is obviously doing everything they can for extra cash I don’t know if there’s money troubles or not but I think the rating easily could have been better but that portion size was unforgivable especially considering the price
Nice place regardless clean and tidy with a buzzing atmosphere and despite previous reviews saying that the food is bad and microwaved etc I wanted to see for myself and we definitely enjoyed ourselves but please look at the sort of things above as this is what will lose...
Read moreWe stopped here to meet some friends for a drink and Sunday lunch. Out friends cycled over and weren't eating so we sat outside for a couple of drinks before they left and we went inside for food. A good choice as it happened as there was a screaming child inside when we arrived but he'd left by the time we wanted to eat.
Dogs are welcome inside which was good as it's a nice beach to walk along when the tide is out. Check tide times if you plan on walking your dog, though, as there's nothing but water and concrete when the tide is in.
A good selection of beers, the Directors was well kept, and they display an impressive array of gins. Sadly on this occasion we were not sampling spirits but it's duly noted for next time. Service is quick and friendly with a god atmosphere in the pub generally.
Sunday lunch was really rather good. I had the beef which was tender and tasty while my partner had chicken which was equally well done. The vegetables were freshly cooked and very nice, the cauliflower cheese a pleasant surprise. I initially I thought a couple more roast potatoes would have been welcome, especially as they were crisp and fresh rather than the all too frequent re-heated dried out item, but the vegetable and meat portions were generous so no chance of being left hungry.
Definitely a good value Sunday lunch and we would go there again if we were in that part...
