Myself, my husband and our son had a wonderful walk through the village and surrounding countryside but unfortunately this positive experience was not replicated in The George Inn. We had made a reservation in advance and the table was ready for us when we arrived. Sadly the aubergine steak had run out just as I was about to order and so I chose the jackfruit burger instead. My husband ordered chicken and my son the courgette spaghetti. When the food arrived I was disappointed that all the delicious-sounding accompaniments were all already in the burger stack. This meant that every mouthful was the same and I couldn't identify the different elements if they were even all there. It was ok but definitely not worth £15.50. The spaghetti dish my son ordered was the worst food I have ever had when eating out! Bland is an understatement - it had absolutely no flavour whatsoever. How any chef with a sense of pride in their profession could send that out of the kitchen I have no idea. They obviously had never tasted it. My son tried to add flavour with salt, pepper and some of the bean salad that came with my husband's chicken but really the spaghetti was beyond salvation. I swapped meals with my son half way through as mine was slightly better. So food overall = not good. (The chicken was a good sized portion and well-cooked so I'm wondering if the chef has a grudge against people who don't eat meat or is someone who thinks that vegetarians don't have taste buds?) Moving on to the service.... The waiter who took our order was pleasant enough but once the food had been served, noone came to ask how our meals were. We ate everything as we were hungry after a 3 hour walk but this did not reflect our opinion of the food. After we had finished eating, noone came to clear our table. Noone came to ask if we wanted dessert or another drink . Eventually we decided it was time to go so we left our dirty table. At the bar when I requested to pay I was expecting the woman to ask how everything had been but nothing. I paid by card and was about to say something but decided that maybe the staff all know that the food is bad so they don't ask on purpose. There was no sense from anyone that they cared if we had had a good experience or not and definitely no attempt to entice us to return. As I left Lacock I felt sad that such a beautiful place is not served well by the George Inn. Possibly they have become complacent by having coachloads of tourists who come once and therefore don't need to be impressed. I don't understand though how the individual members of staff don't appear to want to provide good customer service or tasty food. As I walked away I had to resort to eating jelly babies to try to get rid of the lingering oily taste in my mouth from the world's...
Read moreAVOID!! Planned a trip to Lacock and thought we would have lunch while we were there, so as I am coeliac we looked for the best Gluten Free Menu which happened to be the George Inn. On arrival the Pub looked very interesting with it's features and the staff seemed friendly and helpful. I booked in advance so we would be sure of a table as it was a Sunday I thought it would be busy, so when I phoned to make the booking for a Sunday! I mentioned that the Gluten Free Menu looked very good and he assured me that it was and after taking the booking he said look forward to seeing you on Sunday. When we sat down at the table I chose my courses from the menu only for the waitress to return and inform me they didn't have the Wiltshire Ham to make the starter, so disappointed I chose another starter only for her then to return to inform me they don't do a Gluten Free Menu on Sunday's, which I replied why didn't you inform me of this when I made the reservation for a Gluten Free Meal on Sunday!!…...I was given the Old Chestnut of the regular Chef is on Holiday and they had a stand in (I have seen this sad excuse given to a previous dissatisfied customer in a review I read post visit, wish I'd read before the visit)….on the verge of getting up and leaving they persuaded me to have the Sunday roast, which I chose the Lamb only for that to arrive and with the first mouthful bite into a frozen Yorkshire pudding!!……….I was really p....d off by now, my partner quickly took the plate back to the bar and told the barman the problem for all the pub to here and they quickly rushed it away and returned with a plate of everything hot, their suggestion of a resolution was to waive the drinks bill, which wasn't a generous gesture considering we only had one drink each, my advice would be choose any other pub or café in the village as the George Inn base their trade on one off tourist visit's and not returning customers as there is always a constant supply to a beautiful village such as Lacock. AVOID THE...
Read moreIt seems some reviewers are getting this place muddled with another George Inn so take note when reading. We stayed here for one night purely as it offered car parking and the website said the rooms had recently been refurbished.. The room was OK, needed a good spring clean - extremely dusty curtains and skirting boards but the sheets appeared clean. On opening the door to the bathroom there was a pungent damp/drain smell and the paint was peeling off the walls significantly. The bathroom bin had been emptied but the bin bag had obviously been re-used. The room is directly above the kitchen and there was a constant thudding and banging until the kitchen closed. Tea, coffee and bottled water in the room was a nice touch, also shower gel/soap etc in bathroom.. We had two rounds of drinks both charged at different prices. It was clearly evident that the proprietor wanted to get us fed and out of the way before the later booked tables arrived. The steak and ale "pie" was a tin meat dish containing the meat and a small bit of puff pastry added afterwards on the top. Apparently it tasted OK though. The burger was dry and unappetising but at £13+ I wasn't going to leave it. We were told there was no breakfast available as there are only two rooms but we knew that before we booked. The actual pub is charming and the location is good. However, I did get the feel that maybe its time for a really deep clean and a change of management. It felt like a case of them going through the motions and not really having any heartfelt wish to provide a...
