Visited The Stag & Scotch for the first time on its opening day ( Friday 20th December 2024) . The Micro Pub was very busy on its first day and had 3 local real ales and 1 real cider on the bar. They were from Ludlow , Wye Valley and Noble with plans for more Ludlow and Sarah Hughes ready to on later . ( The beers are well kept and bought in 9 gallon barrels so will be guaranteed to be a quality product)
The owner used to be the manager of nearby New Inn in Newport. He was a good keeper of real ales and used to run a real ale beer festival in a marquee behind the New Inn. At present The Stag and Scotch is a ' wet' only pub with no food only bar snacks .
Seating has about six tables with mainly bench type seating . A narrow passageway to the right of rear bar leads to 'very micro' toilets. Unusually there is a narrow urinal only facility and an equally tight toilet.
It is good to see this new venture flourishing and customers supporting this second micropub in Newport . As dark real ale lovers we have really impressed by the quality and variety of stouts , porters , dark ales and mild the Stag and Scotch has had on . A beer I have wanted to try was the Ludlow Silent Knight Milk Stout and a pleasant surprise was that appearing in the Coffee flavoured variety - well done ! Highly recommended for the quality of the beer .. but it can be very busy later...
Read moreAI is the new way forward so I asked “what do people look for in a pub?” In a flash I received a summary… Key aspects people look for in a pub: Drink selection: A varied range of beers, including local brews, with good quality and proper pouring. Food quality: Tasty and well-prepared pub food, with options for different dietary needs. Atmosphere: A comfortable and relaxed environment, with appropriate lighting and decor. Friendly service: Attentive staff who are welcoming and knowledgeable about the drinks and menu. Community feel: A place where locals can gather and socialize. Cleanliness: Well-maintained facilities including bathrooms. Accessibility: Suitable for people with different needs, including family-friendly options. Value for money: Reasonable prices for drinks and food. ….so this excellent new venture hits all of these offers with the exception of food…. Although I’ve heard good reports of the landlord offering cheese nibbles for free! A great addition to our town and judging by the footfall a lot of people are giving it their thumbs up…. A true success story by a guy who understands the marketplace and runs a great business… long may it continue….a great selection of beers, wines ,spirits and ciders...

It felt like stepping back in yime when you could go to a pub without any music and be kept entertained by the conversation and banter. The real ale choices are really good and well kept, and were promptly served...
