We came here for our first night dinner and drinks. We had to wait firstly for our table which was not a problem as we decided to have drinks downstairs in the bar. The glasses that the spirits were served in felt like we were in a local social club and 3 times we had to send back drinks for having lipstick on the glass! We also asked members of staff very basic questions re dinner and not once did we get an answer. Once upstairs at the table again we asked about certain dishes and still they did not know however this time they actually went and asked the kitchen. The food was mediocre and we eventually had to ask two or three times for another drink order with only half the order arriving. On getting the bill, we then had to ask it to be amended to have the missing drinks removed to which we were visited by a very grumpy looking ‘supervisor’ which an attitude as if we were the issue. At the same time we noticed other customers waiting at the bar to speak with the supervisor to complain, not reassuring! And the worst part was when we were leaving, our teenage boys were retrieving their bikes from the rear of the property and were asked/accused of urinating outdoors and told they were not welcome back. Overall a very badly staffed and managed establishment that we will never revisit whether...
Read moreSo I left tonight's dining option you to a friend tonight and she chose The Winking Owl. We arrived at 5pm and were seated quickly.
Advice was sought on what to drink (I was driving) so the idea of having an Appetizer in a wine glass was a great idea, I felt that I was having a chardonnay.
I went for the burgers, and I'm sure we'll all admit we've had a fair few burgers in our time, but oh my! That was a burger, home made not full of bulking agents, just good beef. The chips were hand cut and the bbq sauce that came with it were brilliant. My friend had the burger with haggis and cleared her plate, but I'm still not sure how. There must have been half an inch of haggis below the burger and another half an inch on top.
I was brave and attempted to eat it as you world normally, Jake went for the knife and fork option as there was no fitting it into her mouth.
The food was just delicious. Now to the staff. Every place that serves good wishes they had staff like those who worked here tonight. Friendly, happy, helpful, not pushy at all. Happy to make recommendations and suggestions (which was great)
Seriously if you ever pass through Aviemore, stop here and eat, if after 5pm book a table in advance. I'm saying this as I noticed as we left all but one table had a...
Read moreLovely food and great service from new waitress. My partner and I stopped here (21st Aug) for a snack on our way North to Inverness. There are quite a few places to eat in Aviemore but having looked online before our journey, we liked the look of The Winking Owl and despite only having a light bite, we weren't disappointed.
On the day we arrived, it seemed the whole of Aviemore was preparing for a Harley Davidson festival and when we first arrived at The Winking Owl, we found the gate shut and feared they were closed but a sign said 'business as usual', so we ventured in.
Our waitress (Sharon) had only just joined but couldn't have been more helpful or friendly and if there was anything she was unsure of she checked and came back with an answer. There's a good choice of starters and mains but we weren't that hungry, so ordered some drinks and each had the Meze Board, which was delicious. To be honest, if we hadn't both eaten a large breakfast, we would have had more but what we had, we enjoyed and will definitely eat here again, when we return to the area....
