This restaurant has been on our list for far too long, and we finally ticked it off last night . The booking process was very easy. On arrival, we were greeted by friendly, professional staff, and we sat in the bar area, which was very welcoming There is a fantastic drinks selection. we chose a glass of Nyetimber Rose & a pint of vocation brewery beer. There is a blackboard with specials and various other dishes. We were presented with a printed menu, too. We started our meal with some bread which is baked onsite. The sourdough was as good as I've had in michelin Star Restaurants, and the Focaccia I described as "like a pillow" it was so light. The butter was just the right temperature to spread, too. We shared a lobster crumpet. This was a dish I could eat over and over again packed with flavour. For mains, We chose the Scallops, tomato & courgette & also went for the beef fillet, which is an updated version of one of the owners' dishes from their appearance on Masterchef the proffessionals. The Scallops were perfectly cooked with the crust I'd expect from being pan roasted, the sweetness of the Scallop meat balancing the flavour along with the lightly pickled courgette & tomatoes that popped with that fresh greenhouse taste I really enjoy. The sauce again packed with flavour seasoned properly. The fillet steak cooked exactly how I like it, the sauce & crumb on top, adding extra depth to the flavour of the meat. The pot of cottage pie , carrot & peas gave the dish a traditional but modern feel and the puree smooth, packed with flavour and seasoned to perfection. We added a side order of chips. Obviously, care is taken when sourcing produce as the quality of potato used was excellent. After a pause, we decided on desserts going for sticky toffee pudding and bakewell tart. The sticky toffee was the best we had tasted in a long time light with a real depth of flavour in the pudding and the sauce. The pastry of the bakewell tart again was as good as I've had recently at michelin Star Restaurants. The fruit picked locally added a real burst of hedgerow flavours. The whole experience of visiting Fourwards was a pleasure , service excellent, real culinary skill & care in the cooking of every dish we ate. And the venue is stylish whilst still being warm & welcoming. Definitely value for money, portions sizes perfect and we will be returning soon and booking the private...
Read moreWe went for a family meal. I Had the steak, the flavours were great, and all meals were cooked well. The steak came with a good range of sides, and the rest of the family were pleased with their food.
A few things stood out to me, that i would expect to be better for the high prices they are charging.
Upon arriving we had to wait at the bar for twenty+ mins and have our order taken there, while there was loads of seating available in the restaurant and we had booked. If you have booked and arrive on time you usually are able to go straight to your table, this was strange way greet and serve us i felt.
The pre booking / reservation system asks for a ridiculous £24 per person if you cancel inside 24 hours. This is Earl Shilton not London, £10 is the going rate. £24 is just greedy. This was enough to put us of going for years. We have never cancelled on restaurants before, but i think this sets completely the wrong tone, before you have even eaten. I appreciate its a small family business, but this high cancellation charge is just the wrong way to start.
Service was very good, food came fast, but the lack of menus, made it hard to make a decision for desert, i understand you change the menu regularly, people expect menus, its a basic restaurant standard.
Desserts were divine when they did arrive.
The flavour and presentation of food was absolutely great, so i cant knock that.
Overall we would dine again, now we know...
Read moreWith the current almost draconian restrictions my experience might have been clouded, however, I found it a little "up itself" and the staff over formal and wooden. There was no warmth or engagement from the staff to the diners. I eat out all over the country and especially in London where I usually live and Ashfields could do with lightening up and easing off a bit witheir their attitude. Far too formalised and scripted with their communication. This doesn't lend itself to making customers feel comfortable and relaxed, and there needs to be some sense of humour injected into the service rather than the cold, formal tight-arsed waiting staff.
The food was OK, well presented and quite tasty, however, the dessert was way too big and the restaurant could easily double its profits by serving half portions. In fact a little more on the main course instead wouldn't have gone amiss. My comment about tgat was lost on the waiter who just appeared to be offended rather than recognise the humour intended.
I can get a far better meal in London at almost half the price in a restaurant with better service, more relaxed and warmer staff. Because there's so much more competition in the capital standards are higher and prices are lower for an equivalent menu.
Thank you for the evening anyway, but I'll choose...
