Visited for the first time since the refurbishment, interior a lot brighter than previously which is a good thing. I'd planned on trying the carvery but upon seeing it I changed my mind, very poor selection of veg and what was on offer was dry. Mushy peas on offer, an odd carvery option. My dining partners tried it anyway and regretted it, not pleasant and the Yorkshire puddings were mass produced. The Toby, while not perfect, does the carvery thing much better. I went for the "Ultimate Cod" which was acceptable but not worth close to £9.00 with the small portion of chips and dry mushy peas. Amusingly they move the fish to one side to it comes off the side of the plate, presumably to make it seem bigger, the mass of empty plate in the other side spoils t b at plan though :) Puddings took ages to come a d the £5 sticky toffee was obviously just a microwaved one with custard on, it wasn't sticky and didn't seem to have toffee on. Female company reported the toilets were dirty, littered with paper and that there was a condom in one of the cubicles. A but much for 5pm on a Friday. Was happy to gave given it a go but won't be back, even the kids said as much.

Had a traditional pub meal of a plough mans. There was plenty of meat but it obviously included the end pieces of an old joint as some of it was really dry and hard. There was also a large amount of cheese. There were two nice warm baguettes but not even enough butter to cover one. The dressed salad was a couple of pieces of green leaves that had seen better days and definitely hadn't seen any dressing and some celery that had been cut a day or more previously, judging by the browned ends. The staff in general were ok at best to us but a lady on a table next to us asked for her meal to be replaced she was told "you can but it'll come out exactly the same"!

Traveled here for a Carvery, to be told it had just finished @ 14:30 It closes on weekdays for 2 hours each day from 14:30 till 16:30 So unless you are visiting outside of the 2 hour shut down period. Do not travel here for Carvery! Other menu is available. Once we got back on the road too our hotel, we passed a “Toby Carvery” 😤 I have tried to update the opening times of Carvery , with no joy. See attached photo instead.

I think one star is actually better than it deserved. Having been to this pub numerous times, living less than 10 minutes walk away it was more of a convenience than anything else. Well tonight I went there for the last time.

I must admit I have never have I had a great meal in this place, but when you are hungry and can't be bothered to cook it will just about do. Tonight I ordered a curry banquet, sounds exotic right? Well knowing this place and having had it before I knew it would be a few chips, rice, massive Naan, and a few other things, which suited me.

After about 5 minutes waiting for the food to be thrown together - out it comes. I was rather alarmed when I overheard one of the of waitresses talking to another waitress outside of the Kitchen with my plate of food in her hand. I am fairly certain she asked her whether she should serve this food to a customer. Me being me and hate kicking up a fuss started eating it anyhow, but my eyes kept being drawn to the 3 onion bharjis which where cooked beyond recognition. It was actually tough to break them in half. The rest of the curry I gave a good go but more because I was hungry and I really do not like complaining.

Anyhow, after a half eaten meal, I had made the decision I would say something to the waitresses when they came to lift my plate. I watched 3 of them flittering about place talking to each other and making themselves look busy. After about 20 minutes of this and no one liftimg my plate and asking me whether the meal was okay I just walked out of there and thought I would hit them where it really hurts - and write a public review. I can honestly say this is the first time I have written a bad review for anything so to say I am annoyed with my experience in this place is an understatement.

Finally, the most worrying thing about this, is there are people working in Kitchens that produce this kind of rubbish and get...

Dec 2018 - Re-visited Gildersome Arms after a long absence to find a change of management and a much improved atmosphere. I do not seem to be the only one to notice the difference. The place was busier tonight on a mid-week Wednesday than they were on a peek day Saturday / Sunday before. Full marks to the new manager and assistant manager for leading from the front!

Aug 2018 - Just as the food was getting better again and getting use to the refurbishment, then the pleasure of going there is spoilt by perents that think that having kids running around screaming and a management that has no backbone to maintain order. Now don't get me wrong, kids should be able to play, and there is a good play area outside, however if families think that it is there right to eat it peace and then disrupt everyone else afterward then that is pure antisocial behaviour and management should stop it. Boycotting this pub for a while. There are plenty of other places to eat.

Jan 2018 - What has happened to the Gildersome Arms? We have visited twice recently and the food standards have dropped through the floor. The food being served is tepid at best and when this was returned we where treated to a quick re-heat. Other diners where complaining of the same poor standards. This is just not good enough. We will be eating elsewhere for a few month in the hope that in improves in the future.

Friendly staff and good place for family get-together. Popular for birthdays and after wedding parties. smallish play area with pirate ship through the rear doors.

Parking is easy and there are 3 disabled parking spots. Good access for wheel chairs.

Food is well served and there are usually offers on. The offers change over time so you will...

I visited here this evening with my wife. The place looks nice, the staff were pleasant.

My wife needed the toilet, but had to use the gents as the ladies was blocked. Apparently, a plumber had been called 12 hours earlier but hadn't arrived. I'm not sure if anyone thought to call another.

We ordered food. I ordered the 8oz sirloin steak at £12.79, my wife ordered the carvery at £7.49.

She got by FAR the better deal. Lots of nicely cooked, tasy food. Perfect! The description of the steak included tomato, peas, onion rings and a large portion on chips.

When my steak came, the onion rings were missing and the portion of chips was certainly not large. In fact, calling it regular/medium might be generous.

I mentioned this to the waitress who offered to take my meal back. I just asked if the missing ingredients could be brought out.

The onion rings were brought out but I was informed that portions of chips were measured out and I was given the correct amount. That's fine, but how about changing the description on the menu to just a portion of chips, rather than a 'large' portion of chips? It's very misleading and disappointing. I was even more disappointed when I had another look at the menu and saw that the 'ultimate mixed grill' was available for the same price.

My 8oz steak was cooked nicely, but it wasn't the best piece of sirloin. I had to leave about 20% of it as it was too chewy.

Overall, I'd recommend the Gildersome Arms, but I would stick to the carvery. My wife had a fabulous meal whilst my meal was a fiver more and left me with...
