Really disappointed in this place after researching places to eat for lunch. We eat a lot of asian food and were looking forward to trying what seemed like a trendy addition to Lewes. Had 2 bao buns (BBQ pork and Vegan chicken), Veggie Bun dim sum, plus bubble tea.
The bao buns had a passable filling but the actual bun was not right at all. Just tasted like it had come frozen from an asian supermarket and heated through. No texture and was just like mush. The sauce was a bit sickly and must have come from a jar. The worst part of the meal though was the dim sum buns. I have never had anything so bad from an asian street food style restaurant. The filling was minute and bland, so was 95% bun which was the same mushy defrosted stuff. Gave an extra star because they provided chilli sauce on the table which we covered the buns in to help eat them!
The bubble tea was also the worst we have ever had, and we have tried from many places in Brighton and Worthing. The first one they filled with ice even though we requested no ice. The second one was just white (?) with very little taste. First time we couldn't finish a bubble tea. The whole experience was topped off with not receiving any napkins or cutlery, and there was nowhere to get them ourselves. They seemed too busy to ask too.
The only good thing I can say is that they provide comfortable chairs, and provide chilli sauce as already mentioned. Perhaps some of the other items on the menu are better, but we certainly won't be returning so we...
Read moreI found this spot by chance in a rather unassuming, unique location by the river and decided to pop in for a quick lunch. It shared the same building with various other shops and restaurants such as a cafe, sweet shop, butchers and fishmongers.
I ordered the tonkotsu ramen, which is one of the classics in Japan, consisting of char siu pork with egg and some vegetables in a pork broth. The noodles were cooked well and had a nice bite to them. For a tonkotsu ramen, I would have preferred the broth to be thicker and meatier. It was slightly bland. But nevertheless, for only £9 and for a town like Lewes where the demand for Asian cuisine is supposedly still relatively low, it was far from bad - a very reasonable meal.
I plan on returning to try the various other things on the menu,...
Read moreI recently visited Bubble + Bun and overall I was left with a wonderful impression.
What I liked: • The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. Simple interior, good lighting, comfortable chairs — a pleasant place to relax or enjoy a meal in a casual setting. • The staff were friendly and attentive. Drinks and dishes were served quickly. • The food was very tasty. The bao buns were soft and well filled, especially the pork one — juicy, flavorful, with a good balance of sauces. The Tom Yum was excellent. • Great view from the window. • Reasonable prices.
Bubble + Bun is a great choice if you want to try Asian street food. The food really stands out and the service is very good.
A solid 5...
