It is many, many years since I'd been to the Childwall Abbey and looked forward to our visit. Sadly not as mobile as I once was, I did phone first to see what parking & access was like. Indeed there were disabled parking spaces available and level access through the side entrance however, what I didn't check were the 'facilities', which is a lesson learned. If you are wheelchair bound or with limited mobility then the Ladies toilets are wholly unsuitable. Up two or three stairs depending which way you approach and although two cubicles have a grab rail in each there is NO manoeuvrability and with apologies for possibly too much information, I and my two crutches had to reverse in to the tiny cubicles and very low-level loo. I have contacted Marston HQ and received a reply back, that tells me there are no plans to accommodate an accessible toilet. As a whole, while the pub was adequate, it was noisy with both TV and music battling for attention: my friend and I had gone for a long overdue catch-up so the background distractions were mildly off-putting, but clearly suited other patrons. Food was fine and the chef/waiting-on staff were extremely helpful when offering me an alternative dessert when my first choice wasn't available. In many ways a disappointing experience and unsurprisingly, we will not be making a return visit in the...
Read moreThis place has really gone downhill. A local pub for local people only it seems. Bar maid was lovely to the regulars and really strange with us. Haven't been for approx 2 years, it used to be really welcoming and the food was lovely, not sure what has happened. Service from the barmaid was terrible; arrived at 15.30 and, as there were no other tables, asked if we could sit on a table that was reserved at 17.30. Informed "Yeah, but if they come earlier you'll just have to move won't you." Bar maid spilled my beer, an accident, but then didn't offer an apology or to fill it up. Really strange League of Gentlemen vibe like we weren't wanted.
Starter of nachos was abysmal. Heated in the microwave so much that the cheese had formed into a hard rock on the plate, never had to use a knife and fork to eat nachos before, but new year is all about new experiences I suppose.
My lasagna main was a little better, but still clearly warmed up in the microwave. My partner's burger and chips were just basically grease, couldn't see any potato on those chps. The burger looked as though it was old and warmed up, not cooked on the day, which is the likely cause of their vomitting.
Didn't expect a gourmet meal, but this was shocking for the price. Would've got better quality food from a takeaway on a night out. Won't...
Read moreWe stayed for one night at the Childwall Abbey Hotel whilst visiting a friend and were very impressed with the overall experience. We had dinner at the hotel which was great with good portion sizes and a fantastic vegetarian selection (which can sometimes be a struggle at other hotels). Breakfast in the morning was spectacular with my partner and I each having a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. The staff made our stay an especially wonderful experience and were so friendly and helpful. We had made a mistake at dinner and ordered our food and drinks to the wrong table, however, when we informed staff of our error they quickly rectified the situation and even poured my partner a fresh drink as ours had been waiting on the bar for some time which is, in my opinion, above and beyond service! The lovely lady (sarah)who served us in the morning for breakfast was so friendly and efficient. We had our coffees within 5 mins of sitting down and did not feel rushed to finish our meal (which is an issue we have encountered at other hotels). Our room was beautiful and fully equipped with everything we needed, however, if we had needed anything I would have had no worries about speaking to the friendly and welcoming staff. I highly recommend this hotel and we will definately...
