Retsina Greek Restaurant & Taverna — Restaurant in Liverpool

It was OK. I hadn’t been to retsina for a couple of years as previously it was underwhelming. I went in hoping it had improved, bud sadly not. My review is intended to be constructive because this place could and should be a gem. Family run, great location, lovely setting, exactly the kind of place I would love to go to regularly. Front of house were lovely and helpful, where it’s let down is the food. I can’t say the food was bad, but I can’t say it was good either. I ordered Dolmades to start, two very small dolmades arrived. Although the flavour was ok, they were far too small to serve only two as a starter. Main was stifado, meat was tender, portion was small but the sauce was pretty thin and not very flavourful. Pretty certain the onions in it were jarred pickled onions rather than kokaria or even shallots. I think the kitchen staff could benefit from experiencing some of the other Greek food places liverpool...

I love Greek food, but I dont like it bland or burnt, or overcooked and dry, unfortunately it was...very low lightning also which isnt great if your eyesight is poor, very dated inside with an annoying Greek guitarist on the telly which acts as the music, on repeat 🙄...owner was lovely but the food is way way overdone.. my partner got the mixed grill and its was all dry and overcooked, I got the retsina chicken which was ok but just no taste, the chips where greasy and soggy..just not great, our usual Greek was closed tonight, so we thought we would try, unfortunately won't be going back. Oh Keo was nice and the apple crumble was nice, and tiramasu was nice...

There's plenty of restaurants in Liverpool which are flashy and over priced. The food might still be good, but you certainly pay for it.

The Retsina is one of those places which isn't overly flashy when you walk in, it's a small homely place. But the food is great and authentic (to the best of my knowledge) and the prices are fair.

If you're not in a rush, order the 'Meze' which is a banquet of small dishes and gives you a good sample of different types of Greek food. I've not had a better meal anywhere else in Liverpool than a Retsina Meze.

Just make sure you're hungry as it's a lot of food. But you can always take any left overs...
