I waited in Peckham for 40 minutes for this to open at 18:00. The restaurant is decorated and furnished quite well. The music creates an ambience to Caucasian people who regard themselves as "hippy" or "urban". One of the tracks was laughable, reminded me of something you'd expect to hear that features on an interlude of "The Fresh Prince" from the 90's. This is for the middle class who have probably never had real Vietnamese food. The phở is either chicken or beef.. £2.00 for meatballs. No special on offer here. The portion borders on pathetic. The Pho already had an insulating amount of beansprouts in the phở. This was clearly to pack it out and make you think the portion was good. The basil was ore added along with pinch of coriander. The condiments were brought to you on a rationed little Petri dish. No fish sauce available.. the lemon was stuck to the side of the bowl. It looked ridiculous. It's been vamped up by the middle class yuppys of Peckham. The fact you couldn't break your own basil, coriander and add your own chilli just screamed how Arrogant the chef and the establishment are. A service charge snuck onto my bill too. This is Vietnamese food made for middle class lazy privileged Brits who wouldn't know what to do with the actual condiments. They may as well serve the food with a fork and spoon too! I did eat and finish my bowl. I was in a long journey and hungry.. had I not been, I would have not taken a bite and refused the dish and possibly left. The broth wasn't that bad, it was clear. However, it certainly wasn't to my satisfaction. I give a 1/10 as most the staff said thank...
Read moreWe popped in on a busy Saturday night without a reservation and were very happy that they had a seat available for us. The food came out relatively quickly and all staff were friendly and positive, so this helped to justify the 12.5% service charge added to the bill (I'm not saying that service charge is a good thing, servers should simply be paid more. But if it's going to be on the bill as a standard I'm happy to pay it if the service is good). There's a nice buzz in general which is enough to keep a lively atmosphere but still have a conversation at a comfortable level. This was our second visit here. My first time was several years ago during the lunch service which was much quieter as expected. We ordered the spring rolls, pork skewers and beef pho. All the food was super fresh and delicious and whilst I couldn't fault my food, my partner was disappointed that coriander was put into the pho as standard, as opposed to coming on a separate dish similar to some other restaurants. If you can't tolerate coriander, make sure you tell them during your order! In total we spent just over £20 per person. We were both full, but I feel like value could be improved by including meatballs in the pho, instead of a £2 optional extra.
If you're in the area and like vietnamese food you should definitely pop in,...
Read moreBanh Banh was a 2nd option to be honest however it was worth it!!!! Despite the small waiting time, we we're seated by the bar, ordered drinks. Great ambience with the bar staff and like minded conversation...once we ordered then that's when we were WOW-zed!!!
Chicken wings which can with high recommendations, prawn spring rolls, beef soup/stew, jasmine rice!! How one got to finish a bottle drink and then be served up and coming cocktails by fantastic Nick and his apprentice oh gosh...we felt privilege and content with our choice and at least giddy on my part. Such amazing staff despite the mis-communication with swaying...we stayed permanently at the bar as that was the highlight of our evening plus the food!!!
