We went to dinner at Omni on Friday and had a 6 pm reservation to take advantage of the half price tasting menu. We arrived 5 minutes early and we're seated quickly.
The atmosphere was cozy and refined, and the tasting menu is just all the small plates which makes ordering easy.
The food itself was all really good, but not mind blowing. Standouts were the cabbage and carrots. The pumpkin sliders were only okay, and none of the bread served was very good. The wine was good but my cherry Manhattan wasn't very flavourful.
The value for money really can't be beat -- £40 already is a pretty good deal, and half price it's a steal.
However, the evening was spoiled by the service. The servers were perfectly nice, but the service was incredibly slow. We had a 30 min break in the middle of our meal where we--and the rest of the restaurant -- were just sitting around wondering where our next plate was. We also noticed that the tables in either side of us, who arrived after us, routinely got their food first.
Slow service isn't great, but it's forgiveable. What isn't forgiveable was what happened at the end: we finally finished our meal, and I had been spending the whole evening deciding what I was going to order for dessert. We were the summarily informed that our 1.5 time limit had expired and they would need the table back, so they were bringing the bill. Not only did I not get dessert, but the reason I didn't get it was because the staff failed to serve my meal in a reasonable time--not, as was implied, because I was slow or difficult or out staying my welcome. It should not take 1.5 hours to serve small plates to two people who arrived early and ate quickly. No apology, no acknowledgement -- just, you need to go. I did express my dissatisfaction and was given some weak excuses, nothing to try to rectify the situation (which, at bare minimum, could have been an offer to pack up a slice of cake to take away).
Like I said, the food was good if not particularly inventive, the atmosphere was charming, and the value was excellent. (An important note is that I would give this 2 stars had I not been in during the half price deal, as the value argument would have been weaker.) But I would pay more for decent service, and there are loads of better options just a few doors down that...
Read moreI came to this restaurant a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it, hence why the 2 stars. Food was amazing, service was great. Today I had a booking and when we arrived there was a free table and a high narrow table by the window. We were given the narrow table by the window that had uncomfortable high chairs. I asked whether we could use the other one and the waitress dismissively said it was taken. There was nobody there. When my friend arrived, she asked again whether we could be moved as we were very uncomfortable. The waitress again said no and did not explain further. My friend politely insisted as I had raved about this place and wanted to try the lovely food I had described but did not want to sit in an uncomfortable chair and narrow table for dinner. The waitress then said the table was taken from 7 (it was 6pm then) so we could not have it. We then decided to leave. I walked to the bar and told the waitress we would like to have dinner comfortably so we had decided to leave. She then offered the empty table and said we could have it until 7 and then move before the next people arrived. By this point we did not feel like staying as she had been quite unpleasant and unwelcoming from the moment we arrived. We thanked her and said we had decided to leave. She rolled her eyes and said "ok then bye".
I have recommended this restaurant to a lot of my friends and they have all enjoyed it. It is a real shame the experience gets tarnished by such bad...
Read moreFinding a fully vegan caterer for a wedding is a lot more difficult than one might expect, so we were so happy to not only have a fully vegan menu for our big day but also to be able to serve food from one of our favourite South London restaurants, Omni. It was the perfect food to share with guests who were sceptical about vegan food. When we had our first tasting we just knew that this was food we would be proud to serve at our wedding.
We had two tastings to make sure everything was just right, and Jess and George were so receptive to feedback. They were also incredibly organised and quick to respond throughout the process. which, as anyone planning a wedding knows, is essential.
They went above and beyond in helping us work out the drinks and alcohol side of things too. In fact, we were thinking about spending more on alcohol but they gently discouraged us with their knowledge of running events which turned out to be the right decision.
We felt supported from start to finish and couldn’t have asked for better food or service on...
