After reading rave reviews about this place I was really looking forward to trying it. The long queue and full tables were a good sign. The coffee was decent, nothing special. Creme brulé was the standout, uniquely capturing all of the key elements of a quality brulé in cookie form. The Nashville hot burger was quite greasy and messy to eat. The oil had flavour but the chicken fillet was really thin, the processed cheese slice in the bun was cold and hadn't melted which told me this wasn't super fresh. A burger more comparable to a take away chicken shop thing than a £10 gourmet thing it tries to be. The lamb birra and consume were really what I came for and it was the biggest disappointment. The lamb had zero seasoning, hardly any detectable spice, and the salsa couldn't save it. The consume was weak like dish water with bits of coriander in it. I felt ripped off for £12. Maybe I had a bad batch. I applaud the ingenuity of the menu, I may come back and give it another go but until then I can only share my honest opinion of what I got. So gutted.

I have been to Bake Street many times previously and as a local business owner I often recommend them to my customers however I am unable to do that now after a recent decline in customer service and atmosphere. I popped by to see their weekend specials. The second I stepped in and before I could even look I was barked at asking what I wanted. When I did try to ask some questions they just answered on a curt and unfriendly manner. If this was how they are with all customers I'd put it down to their way of being however I have seen them indulging other customers who happened to be white (I am not white). One customer even had her nose in one of their bakes which didn't look that hygienic. It is the first time that I have walked out of a place because of rudeness. I will stop recommending this place to my customers and also be careful going there unless you are white as they seem to prefer white clientele. It is a shame as their bakes are ok albeit overpriced and definitely not good enough to tolerate abysmal customer service.

I’ve been popping in here in-between seeing personal training clients and it’s such a lovely little find. From the outside it looks like an unassuming standard cafe. Inside, the decor is industrial (aka it looks like it’s been set up first and foremostly as a place to make food rather than with a cafe vibe in mind. Indeed, there’s no seating inside, only blue blocks which you’re welcome to stand and eat at. There are seats outside which is covered. I’m not a coffee drinker but apparently they have very good coffee. Their hot chocolate is decent but I really like their buns. I’ve had the Korean chicken bun twice now and it’s delicious. A hot drink and a bun costs about £12 from what I remember. They have a selection of baked goods too, and other food such as toasties. The baked goods look great but I’ve not had a chance to try them. Yet. Staff are polite and friendly and food is served promptly. There’s also a toilet which is a bonus.

To begin with, I could not find half a star for this review ! I popped into this place on a Sunday morning as it was one of the first places to open. I purchased two drinks, a latte and a tea alongside two sausage rolls (beef). I paid just under £20 which I thought was extremely steep considering coffee and a sausage roll or two is cheaper at Selfridges Food Halls or Harrods. With my stomach rumbling and work looming, I paid and walked out.

The so called latte was lukewarm and I had to smack my lips to distinguish any minuscule resemblance of the taste of coffee, for a moment I thought perhaps they forgot to drop the espresso shot of coffee in the milk.

The tea bag was dry as anything ! Literally left floating in the over-boiled water with no change in colour and a slight smell of what was supposed to be an aromatic cup of earl grey.

And finally, the sausage rolls. The pastry was overdone, hard and crunchy. My understanding was that pastry in sausage rolls are to be flaky and crisp and not hard and crunchy. The meat product stank ! It stank soo much that I could not bring it close to my face let alone place the content in my mouth. Suddenly, I was not hungry anymore. In fact, I went the entire day without food until the following morning. Out of curiosity, I broke the so-called sausage roll in half. The meat was soo seriously undercooked with cold bright pink bits of lamb in the centre.

In all honesty, London particularly areas like Hackney and Shoreditch are renowned for their avocado on toast, poached eggs, coffee and artisan bread. Sometimes I walk around wondering how these businesses survive amongst such vicious competition. With places like this, I suppose it’s not hard. Unfortunately I was somewhat desperate and my usual spot didn’t open til 10am.

I generally do not have an issue paying for quality especially when it comes to a decent coffee ! It’s one of my little luxuries when I’m on a twelve hour day shift, but in all honesty, this place is one to avoid...
