I have been seeing so many promotions of this place on socials I decided to come try it one Saturday around lunch time. It's surprisingly not packed with a few empty tables so I quickly went inside to order a masala chai and a milk cardamom bun to have in, as well as getting a few pastries to take away. I ordered a masala suisse, pistachio bun, samosa pastry and mango danish which was their weekend special. The chai was fantastic. I loved how strong the masala spice was. In fact the entire place smelled like that as soon as I walked in which was when I knew it would be authentic and good. It's super hot as they keep the different types of chai in iron kettles which were being warmed up constantly. In terms of the pastries, I must say I was a little disappointed as they didn't really taste that great. The masala pain suisse was unique as they put their masala twist on it but unfortunately that totally overpowered the chocolate in the filling so all I could taste was just the spice although I must say the pastry dough itself was very flaky and well-made. The samosa pastry was also a let-down because of the lack of curry filling inside, it's not really filled at all although once again the pastry itself was flaky and buttery. I personally wasn't a big fan of the mango danish either. They put rice into the custard filling below the mango which just made it very weird texture wise. The milk cardamom bun was average, nothing special. The filling in the pistachio bun was of a generous amount however it didn't taste like pistachio at all. The atmosphere of the place was very chill and relaxing although it does get busy very quickly as customers come and go all the time being located on the Portobello road. I think I would be happy to come back for the chai but I am hesitant to give their pastries a second go given how many I have already tried.

I 100% recommend visiting the bakehouse early in the morning for the best vibes and food enjoyment. This branch impressed me, and greatly so. I visited on a weekday so unfortunately did not get to try their seasonal menu or weekend specials as those were only available from Fridays to Sunday, but my hunt was for the cardamom bun on this specific visit.

The last time I tried their chai was also my first from their seven dials market location and I did not enjoy the karak chai from there if I were to be perfectly honest. But my opinion did not make a faster switch than after I tried their karak chai from this bakehouse branch, it was amazing! I loved the sweet aromatic karak chai which was mellow and not too strong as to produce an overwhelmingly bitter chai like the last one I had.

The cardamom bun was also a delight, the size was not too big as to become a heavy pastry but remained fluffy and warm. It had incredible plaiting detail accompanied by the softest texture that was enjoyed with some butter spread on it and sips of the karak chai.

Thank you for a wonderful breakfast, I look forward to making my way through all the pastries Chai Guys bakehouse has to offer, especially the bun maska! They offer a loyalty scheme via the embargo app where you can also collect stamps and redeem rewards, unfortunately I did not get the name of the kind lady I was served by but she also provided a nice conversation whilst I waited and this demeanour of not only the employees but the bakers on site and visitors definitely makes it a homely place that one MUST visit when in the...
