We visited from Edinburgh after reading the great reviews but unfortunately we left a little underwhelmed. The restaurant has great potential as it’s in a really nice area and the staff were very nice. We may be spoiled for choice when it comes to really great Thai restaurants in Edinburgh or the people of Clapham have never been to a great Thai restaurant but unfortunately the food just fell flat for us. My Tofu red curry was more like a bland soup. Very watery with very little flavour. So much so that I got bored eating it and that’s never happened before with a red curry. We’ve lived in Thailand so have experienced authentic Thai food and also westernised Thai food and unfortunately I don’t know where Cher Thai restaurant sits. It was somewhere in between. A good choice of dishes on the menu but if a red curry isn’t great then I wouldn’t get my hopes up for the others. Our starters came out at different times so my starter was getting cold while my partner was still waiting on hers. The same happened with my main. It arrived and then I had to wait on my rice.
It was a Friday night so the restaurant was very busy. Overly busy. It was very warm. The only fresh air we got was when the constant stream of takeaway customers where coming in and out of the front door and standing next to our table which spoiled things a little. It’s good to see a restaurant busy but not at the expense of ruining your night. We were sat almost shoulder to shoulder with another table which isn’t a good experience.
I would have liked to have tried a few more dishes but unfortunately we won’t be back as the overall experience was disappointing.
Small tip for the barman. When a customer orders a Spirit and mixer, it should really be in a short glass rather than the half pint of coke and ice cubes that drowned my jack daniels. I couldn’t taste it.
I wish the restaurant all the very best in the future as they are an ambitious team and like I say it...
Read moreWe went for a Sunday lunch. They are usually good, both the taste and atmosphere, but not good experience this time. We ordered two different fried noodles dishes, which are supposed to be two diffent types of noodles. As we were the only customers sitting in, the dishes were served very quickly. Our noodles were served with the same kind of noodles. That's okey. But we were disappointed because they were quite mushy and very fragile. In my plate, I barely found any noodles longer than 5cm, mostly flaky ~1cm pieces. I asked the waitress if this was the right type of noodles. She apparently agreed with me that my noodles were too flaky, so she asked the chef's owner to have a look. He came and stated the noodles were fried fresh, that's why they were falling apart 😊. But he offered to redo the dish and took my plate away. Eventually, the kitchen managed to find nooddles longer than what I had. No doubt they recycled the protein pieces from my previous plate, and the taste was not as good. Anyway, it is ok to make mistakes, but not okey to cover it up with lies.
Thanks for replying to my review. I accept your apology. You handled the situation well.
Something to clarify: The noodles you served again to me, they were longer indeed, but they were still not on the tender side. But it was okey. Usually it only takes about 1 min for noodles to touch the wok, if noodles were freshly prepared. As we were the only customers sitting in, I can't see any explanation that the chef left the noodles in the wok for too long, even for the second plate you served us. Regarding the recycling, I don't want to creat a scene here.. Being respectful to the restaurant and the food, we never waste food. We were hungry, just wanted to enjoy a good meal and a...
Read moreI’m not an expert in Thai cuisine, but most of my best friends are very fond of it, therefore I have been in a lot of Thai places in London and in Uk. I saw this passing by a part of Clapham where I do not normally go often, but never tried it until yesterday, when a friend of mine mentioned that it was excellent. As we were all in the mind for a Thai dinner, we went. The place only takes reservations on the phone, so I recommend booking as it is busy . They told us that we could dine at 20.30 so I put my name down and went to the pub across the street for a few drinks. At 20.12 they kindly called us, and we were seated immediately. Considering how busy they were, this was a very nice gesture, as in many busy places they say they will call you, but never do. I ordered the papaya salad and the river prawn glass noodles, both excellent. My friends ordered some prawn crackers, fragrant, crunchy, fishy, amazingly addictive, and a chicken green curry plus another papaya salad and a Pad Thai. The papaya salad was fresh, spicy but subtle, very flavourful and it had so much depth and complexity, I was mesmerised by it. Possibly the best papaya salad I have ever tasted . The river prawn glass noodles were incredible too, and, according to my friends, their pad Thai and the green curry with chicken were fantastic too. We had some Singha beer pints to accompany the food, the perfect match for what we ordered. I’m glad we discovered this gem of a place ! The prices are honest, and for the high quality of what we had, £38 per person is very cheap if you consider the extremely high quality of what we had . I highly recommend it, and can’t...
