Firstly I'll must say the food is very very good, the sashimi was amazing. HOWEVER the customer service me and my friend experienced was ABSOLUTELY APPALLING! Upon giving us the bill she then said it is cash only. I had called earlier in the day to make the booking and was not advised cash only. There was NO sign on the door, and when we arrived (it was near empty) she did not inform us it was cash only so we had the opportunity to get money before sitting. She pointed to a small sign on the counter that was not easily noticed if not pointed out to us. My friend then went to get money and the woman started getting angry at me saying that I should of bought cash, I asked her to kindly lower her voice as she was causing a scene in such a small cafe but she didn't care. I apologised to the customers as it was very uncomfortable, she offered no apology to anyone. I asked that she remove the service charge on the bill that was £80 as I was not happy with the service she was giving me by yelling at me in front of everyone. She removed the service charge. My friend came back and I explained what had happened then the chef owner out of no where came and said its a family run business, I understood and had no issues with that and said the food was great just not happy with her service of being yelled at. She carried on arguing then he pushed her out of the way. He then got angry himself and said I'm not happy to pay. I was completely confused and bewildered why he said this - as I said I'm happy to pay my bill?! I then said you shouldn't talk to customers like this and he ripped up the bill and told us to get out! I literally felt ridiculed in front of everyone and said again I was happy to pay. He then swore at us as we were leaving. I again said you shouldn't talk to us like this then he aggressively came to the door very close to me and continued yelling. The woman then came up to us and asked me pay! it was comical - I said not now we've experienced such bad customer service, been sworn and threatened at the door. Once we left, the man then came outside and took his apron off and continued arguing. It was such a shock!

Our total bill was approx £80.00 we had no problem paying it minus the service charge once they became very bad mannered and didn't advise cash only....but as soon as he aggressively yelled at us and made us leave the bill that he chose to rip up - went unpaid, that was his own doing.

I've never had such horrible customer service before, they are clearly busy and need to hire more staff to handle the amount of orders and customers to ease their frustrations and not take it out on paying customers.

From some of the reviews I've now read, it appears they've been angry and are rude to...

Nice little restaurant (it's very cosy so not many tables). Impressive menu selection with all sorts of Japanese cuisine from the usual sushi, rice dishes, bentos, to ramen. Not found any other good quality ramen places locally and all other Japanese eating places I've been to only seem to do bentos and sushi. (ramen is a bit different to noodles in texture).

Food can take a while to prepare as everything is freshly made and this is especially so during busy evenings. The food is very flavorful.

They also do Bubble Tea (tapioca fruit / tea drinks) which is popular in Taiwan. This is hard to find in local food places. Lots of different flavours available. Oh and 'Shaved Ice' which is shaved/ crushed ice with real fruit and syrup flavouring. Popular in Japan in the summer.

Friendly staff and they also do deliveries and take away. You can order what you want on their website then collect or have delivered.

One thing I don't like is it's cash only in the restaurant if you're eating in or bank transfer so no convenience of contactless. There are ATMs down the high street but I always prefer to...

The food is wonderful but... the wait time is anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours and I'm talking about after we sat down. We got there and after an hour and 15(being kind) we had nothing on the table but the wine we had ordered, after another 30 we got the first dish, 4 wings!! And 20 minutes later we got a mango salad. That's around 2 hours sitting in a restaurant that has 12 seating places but its overwhelmed by the continuing delivery orders that they take but can't deliver on time because there's only one person cooking. The owner told us, as a moan, that it was a mom and pop place and they struggle but yet they accept all the orders they get and leave everyone waiting because they don't care as there's more costumers. She was incredibly rude to everyone that tried to talk and understand where the food was and why we were all waiting for so long, screaming is a part of the experience as it seems. The chef is not much better but I guess he was busy. I left after 2 hours with 2 dishes out of the order we wanted and they were still taking orders for delivery. The food is good...

What a gem! Had heard about this place from a friend and went Sunday lunch time. Owners are friendly and attentive. Food is well priced for the great quality. In reference to a previous review, it may be slightly more expensive than local cafés but it is significantly cheaper than prices at the top of the hill or in central London yet the quality is good, if not better. We had yellow tail sashimi, Shibuya roll and spicy beef ramen. All were fantastic. It being cash only is the only slight annoyance but with a cash machine a few steps away even this is not a problem. Will be coming back!

My partner and I have been here many times over a period of ~18 months while we lived in Penge. The food here is always fantastic. As someone who lived in Japan for 3 years, I can attest to Hayaku's authentic taste and atmosphere. The owners are friendly and service has always been great. I have never had a bad experience, either eating in or ordering takeout. 100% fully recommended to anyone living in or visiting London: while I've been to other Japanese restaurants in the city, Hayaku is the best!
