Some years ago I bought a sausage roll from Ayers Bakers in Westmount Road , Eltham. Unlike other Ayers products which are excellent , this was quite revolting , consisting of tasty looking pastry concealing a pink mush of a uniform , almost toothpaste consistency , tasting faintly and distantly of some sort of meat. Truly revolting. Today, years later I was foolish enough to be tempted by another Ayres sausage roll from their Blackfen branch, thinking that changing times and geographical distance might have made for an edible product ; it was equally appetising looking , and equally revolting : the same nauseating pink mush, probably from the same pig.
