J. Ayre — Restaurant in London

Some years ago I bought a sausage roll from Ayers Bakers in Westmount Road , Eltham. Unlike other Ayers products which are excellent , this was quite revolting , consisting of tasty looking pastry concealing a pink mush of a uniform , almost toothpaste consistency , tasting faintly and distantly of some sort of meat. Truly revolting. Today, years later I was foolish enough to be tempted by another Ayres sausage roll from their Blackfen branch, thinking that changing times and geographical distance might have made for an edible product ; it was equally appetising looking , and equally revolting : the same nauseating pink mush, probably from the same pig. Growing up Ayres was considered the premier bakers of the area...not so today I'm afraid..had the crab mayo roll...the roll was bone dry and practically disintegrated in my mouth whilst the filling was frankly tasteless...then had an Eccles cake which was all pastry and no filling to speak of...not the Ayres...

Excellent chain of bakers in the south east of London. Supplies of fresh cream cakes, filled rolls, sandwiches, instore baked bread and pastries. Also a good selection of cakes available for ordering for all events. Staff friendly and pleasant. Now these are not the cheapest of bakers but definitely one...
