As an away supporter, over the years I've always enjoyed going to Pawson's Arms before trips to Selhurst Park. It's an old fashioned pub and though busy, bar service has usually always been pretty good and it's had a welcoming feel to it, so we've always gone back.
After a very long journey I was there yesterday before the match to meet a mate. I arrived and it was very busy and queuing at the bar took a long time. That's a bit of an uncontrollable I guess but watching the staff they could have handled service better, but anyway. Having waited at least 15 minutes I was finally served. The lady went away and had a word with someone and then came back and said, quite gleefully I may add, "sorry, we can't serve away supporters". I pleaded, especially having been waiting at the bar for so long but was rudely told I couldn't be served. I wasn't even wearing anything relevant to my team, guess it was just discrimination at my accent.
What a disgraceful way to treat your customers. I've gone there deliberately every time I've visited Crystal Palace for exactly the reason that the service has been good and it's a nice vibe.
If you're going to have a 'no away fans' rule, make it obvious. Put a sign up outside or hire a doorman to regulate it. Don't just let people queue for ages just to smugly tell them they aren't welcome.
Just to add, once this happened many of the locals around me were shocked and disappointed with what happened and one even pointed me in the direction of a different pub. That was really kind. Good club with good supporters are Crystal Palace.
And just to end my story. The mate I met is Irish so ordered at the other side of the bar (having waited over 20 minutes by the way) and got me a drink anyway. Apparently his accent is acceptable and mine isn't.
Obviously I won't be coming back and would strongly recommend any away supporter...

I went on a match day and it’s a well oiled machine. It was busy as you would expect but the brilliant staff and the 360 degree central bar kept the queues to a minimum, I never waited more than 2 or 3 minutes for a drink. They do have a no away fans rule so don’t wear colours and hide you accent and you should be fine, I was.
It’s a comfortable, warm and friendly pub and the interior is beautifully kept. It’s great when the football is on and from my visit I imagine just as good on non match days. Whenever I’m in the area again I’ll pay it another visit, and...
Read moreThe beer, including London Pride (oh yeah) is well kept, and they fairly often do some sort of food, eg pies, barbecue, and in red letter days one of John's wonderful curries...but all this pails in significance compared to the incomparable service! In football days this pub is one that definitely needs elastic walls...and yet when the obliging fellow customers help you to the bar you can confidently expect to be served...
