We attempted to visit this pub after a football match at Crystal Palace, as it was the “designated away fans pub.” We were refused entry by the door staff, as one single person within our group was wearing a scarf of the away (!) team (all others were dressed without any football colours at all). Even when he took off the scarf and put it in his bag, we were still not allowed in. Door staff attempted to send us back to a different pub half a mile away, which we had already passed and seen to be extremely full with home fans. We could see though the windows that The Railway Telegraph had no more than eight customers in it at the time.
Putting this in perspective, the team visiting that day (Fulham) has neither a reputation for troublesome supporters, nor any form of rivalry whatsoever with Crystal Palace. We were a mixed gender group, in which every adult was over forty years old, and we also had two children with us. It was a bitterly cold day, and my son (who was five at the time) was busting to go to the toilet and had been holding on until we got to the pub; despite this he was not even allowed to come in to use the toilet, and we had to frantically search out a back alley before he wet himself.
There may possibly be a sinister explanation for all of this. Just a few doors along the road, another pub was recently closed and flats were built in its place. If the owners have aspirations to do the same and cash in on this pub, perhaps they feel it would help them to secure planning permission for this if they could demonstrate that the pub was losing money? Either way, we were extremely polite and dignified when we attempted to visit this pub, and the way we were treated in...
Read moreI went to visit with 3 family members for a quick drink today (about 5pm) and after being asked what I would like and asking for a coke I was told that the whole pub would be closing for a private function in 10 minutes. I asked about the side room, which had two people in it, and was told that was also closed to us. They whole place was booked apparently. I have never felt so unwelcome in a pub. It was a busy bar with lots of people and didn’t feel at all like a private function was about to start. Nobody was getting ready to leave. I called shortly after and the lady who answered the phone knew nothing of the booking and was asking the manager ‘what shall I say to her then?’. I would have rather just be told they didn’t want to serve us then be given this awkward excuse. Having moved recently to the area we have visited a few times and always had a nice experience but today was very disappointing...
Read moreGreat place to have a few drinks with friends. Spent Xmas Eve there & had a great time with the Kareoke sing along. The staff were very friendly & the place was kept clean. The toilets were kept clean too. The only downfall is there is no food sold there. It would be great if good food platters were sold there. It would make the Pub more attractive to come there. There was also good security there aswell. Overall a good...
