We ate at Shambles on Thursday and it was a disaster! A situation that should have been much better handled by Shambles and where the behaviour of a group of self-entitled men ruined the night for everyone.
We were there for a family dinner to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday. My sons, aged five and ten, were also part of our group.
A group of golfers who appeared to be having a celebratory dinner were sat next to us having moved from outside and the 'f' word was constant. We let it go for quite a while and had we been in a bar or pub we might have expected that kind of language. I asked the waitress to politely ask them to tone down the language. She agreed it was excessive and said she would speak to them. She came back and suggested that we move to the bar as her manager would not let her speak to them.
It wasn't reasonable to ask us to move to the bar so I was forced to approach them myself. I couldn't have asked them in a nicer way to tone down the language. Apart from one very nice gentleman they mocked me and they became so intolerable that I was forced to leave with the children.
After we left a delightful Yorkshireman from the same table came up to my husband, said he was going to knock his block off, and ridiculed us for bringing children to the restaurant. It was a 6.45 booking!
Shambles, I hope you manage the next situation better than this one. The group were local so I expect they will be there again.
I, for one, will...
Read moreWe had an amazing lunch experience in this atmospheric, stylish but homey restaurant. It was hailing outside and the table by the fireplace felt like a refuge. It’s warm, fuzzy, and lovely. Our waitress attentively attended to take care of any of our needs and impressions of the food. Food itself is delicious. They are made with such care and had complexities of flavour and texture that makes each spoonful and forkful a delight.
Here’s what we ordered: Venison tagliatelle - hearty tender venison, al dente tagliatelle that had such a lovely texture, a kick from the capers, melded in harmony in the sweet and umami tomato sauce.
Baked hake - tender, perfectly cooked hake which is a canvas for all the other flavours to shine through. Juicy roasted potatoes, tasty artichokes, and a shellfish sauce with depth that I was crazy about. I think I almost licked the plate clean!
Zucchini fritters - who knew fried zoodles would be this fun to eat. It invites touch, and the crispy skin was well seasoned.
Tiramisu - ordered this classic expecting just a regular lovely tiramisu but was surprised. It is less heavy than most tiramisu, the cream cheese inside was mellow, which is balanced by the thick cocoa. The addition of crumbs gives it a texture that amplified a classic to an all time high.
Will be back for their Friday evening and Saturday evening live pianos. A fine place to dine in...
Read moreThey really lived up to the name, it was a SHAMBLES! It all kicked off when they offered us bread and olives, which they neglected to mention were £5 EACH, this would have been okay if the bread had been fresh or in anyway edible, instead it was rock hard, cold and not fresh at all. We then ordered the squid which again wasn't fresh and tasted like i was eating a car tyre! They then have the cheek to charge you nearly an additional £20+ should you dare to want a steak or lobster dish over and above the circa £29 fee you're already paying for the 2 courses. We ordered both, for the steak to come well done (ordered medium-rare) and the lobster dish to come swimming in a pool of water and taste of next to nothing, it looked like something the Gordon Ramsey would have an expletive ridden rant about on Kitchen Nightmares USA. The chips that came with the steak were undercooked to the point that they were pretty much raw and the beer & bottled still water that we were served was warm upon arrival to the table. When we complained the waitress couldn't summon up a morsel of remorse and had to apologise through gritted teeth. They then had the nerve to still charge us for the starters and the drinks which came to the total of just over £40 still! Shocking service, the food is even worse, if you want to enjoy your evening I would advise giving this place a miss. I would give a...
