When I visited on a Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago, I discovered that the Cutty Sark is not the place to go for a quiet pint. There are indeed three televisions as advertised, what they didn't mention is that all of them are showing different channels at the same time, each with the volume turned right up. When you add the juke box and the fruit machines as well, you can hardly hear yourself think. Having said that, everyone seemed to be having a good time (adding to the noise). The beer was good, not too expensive, the bar staff were friendly and seemed to know what they were doing.
I wasn't able to see any food for sale but I understand they don't do this at weekends, not even crisps or nuts (none that I could see anyway). Some customers were bringing their own food in from the chip shop opposite and the management didn't seem to have any problem with this. They are supposed to have a 5 star food rating but I didn't see this anywhere on display.
The interior is rather dark as there is only one small window next to the front entrance and the windows along the side of the bar don't let much light in either. This meant that even on a sunny Saturday afternoon it was quite dark inside. Don't be put off by this though as the pub itself is nicely decorated with something of a nautical theme in keeping with it's name.
There is a nice garden area overlooking the canal. Children are permitted into the garden but, as with most pubs now, it has been largely taken over by smokers so you wouldn't want to take children there unless you are happy about letting them inhale clouds of cigarette smoke.
There is a review here by someone called Graham Cunningham. He refers to UVF flags being displayed and anti-Irish comments from the staff. All I can say is he must have wandered into the wrong pub as there is nothing like that at all. The walls are decorated with photographs and paintings of the local area and the two barmen on duty were a young fellow called Robert and an older chap called Owen, both obviously Irish themselves going by their accents.
Altogether, this seems to be a nice place to go for a drink and I would recommend it to anyone. One word of warning though, the opening times seem to be wrong. I have tried to go back on a couple of occasions in the week and found the place to be shut well before 11:00pm. I don't know what time they actually close...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAlways a pleasure visiting this pub. The owners make you feel welcome. It is a cash-only bar, and they sell a wide variety of drinks. No food (apart from crisps) is sold. Pop in if you're in the town centre!
Update 13/12/23: New owners have taken over and they are really trying to make an effort and attract new clientele! We visited this evening and it was different in parts to what we have been used to, including allowing children to sit inside (we were the only ones at the time of visit), and food was on sale! We had a mixture of burgers and a ciabatta roll, plus two kids meals. We were all very happy with our food indeed and you can tell it was cooked from scratch. Yes, the prices may be a little on the more expensive side for some people, but for an occasional treat, we had no issues paying it. The (new) chef they had was friendly and was genuinely interested in our feedback (all positive!) All good, well done to the new owners, and we will return (with or without the kids!) We've always said over the past 15 years we have been that it would be nice having hot food served after a few pints, and they've nailed that! Let alone be able to pay...
