Shocking service. We booked a table for six from 1-4pm on Saturday in the beer garden following reopening post lockdown. During the three hours we were there we were served twice, once when we originally sat down and only once afterwards in the entire 3 hour period.
After we had finished our first round of drinks we tried to get the attention of bar staff, but there seemed to be only 3-4 bar staff serving 20+ tables in the beer garden. The bar staff seemed to disappear for long periods at a time and when we did finally manage to get one staff member's attention who was delivering drinks to a table, he told us he wasn't allowed/able to take orders himself and would ask someone to come and take our order. 30 minutes later and no one turned up.
We tried ordering via the Youngs app instead as we appreciated there would be some teething problems the first week after lockdown, but the app crashed multiple times (trying on multiple different phones). After an hour we eventually managed to successfully order via the app and received a second round of drinks.
When we tried to order a third round of drinks, we again couldn't get the attention of anyone for another 30 minutes (the original staff member never returned or asked anyone to come and take our order as promised). Eventually a different staff member came over and we placed an order (and paid) 40 minutes before we were due to leave (5 pints of beer, nothing big). 40 minutes passed with no drinks, yet bang on 4pm the same staff member was right on time to tell us our table time was up and we needed to leave.
We told him we had paid for our drinks 40 minutes ago and wanted our order, which he seemed surprised at despite him personally taking our order. Ten minutes later our order arrived in plastic beer glasses and we were told to take our drinks with us and leave.
I appreciate that the pub must be getting back up to speed post lockdown but one successful order of drinks in 3 hours is shocking, as is being promised by staff that they would return to our table to take our order and then nobody turning up (that happened twice with two different staff members). All to quick to kick us out without the drinks we had paid for once our table time was up however.
A real shame as I really liked this pub pre-COVID but we won't be returning any time soon...
Read moreWe visited The Devonshire yesterday as a family, including our four-legged companion, for a Sunday lunch — and we couldn’t have been more pleased with the experience. From start to finish, everything was exceptional.
We had a reservation, and upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and promptly seated. The ambiance was lively, with a welcoming buzz of fellow diners enjoying their meals. The restaurant strikes the perfect balance between vibrant and cozy, making it an ideal spot for a relaxed family meal.
All of us opted for the Sunday roasts, and the food did not disappoint. The dishes were beautifully presented, with each plate showcasing the kitchen’s attention to detail. The flavors were outstanding — tender, succulent meats, perfectly crisp roast potatoes, rich gravy, and seasonal vegetables cooked just right. The portions were generous, leaving us fully satisfied but still tempted to try dessert.
The service was equally impressive. The staff were friendly, attentive, and efficient, ensuring we never had to wait long for anything. They made us feel genuinely welcome, which added to the overall positive experience.
The Devonshire goes out of its way to accommodate guests with dogs.
A standout feature for us was how dog-friendly the place is. Our furry friend was not just tolerated but genuinely welcomed. The team provided a water bowl and even had treats available, which was a lovely touch. They even have a doggy-version of a roast dinner on the menu!
Overall, we had a fantastic time and would highly recommend The Devonshire for a delicious Sunday roast in a lively, welcoming setting — especially if you’re dining with a dog. We’ll definitely be...
Read moreReally not sure what happened here! We arrived on time for a midday booking only to have to wait outside for 10 minutes while the person ahead of us was being served/seated.
Once inside, we were told our table was not yet ready (bearing in mind the entire venue was basically empty), but we would be lead to it and they would quickly set it up for us.
Upon being lead to our table, it was made very apparent that something had gone quite wrong somewhere as our "table" was in actual fact, a bar. Six stools had been set up in their "Thirst Aid" bar (BEHIND the bar, can I add), with one of the stools being in front of a sink, another being in front of a dishwasher and another being in front of beer taps. Really???
I quite clearly booked for lunch - I don't know how management thought we were going to eat Christmas lunch over a sink, and all crammed single-file into one row behind a bar? Originally my booking request was intended for 14:15, however the venue came back to me and said they couldn't accommodate that time, but were able to take our lunch booking for midday, so I agreed. All I can think is that there was some sort of a mix up and we were assigned a random seating allocation in a rush so as to not lose the booking? Either way I found it quite poor that we be expected to sit and have our meal behind a bar. To top it all off, the roasts were quite average and we had to ask for additional gravy as the gravy servings provided were pretty meagre.
All that being said, staff on the day were agreeable to changing our booking to a proper table, and were friendly, attentive and polite - the review is more for the mix up and food, rather...
