This is a really nice, clean, well kept pub with a very friendly lady behind the bar. However, I decided to have a bar snack with my beer and was served the absolute worst Mexican Tacos anyone could imagine. This is the kind of food that is SO BAD you feel you've been scammed by ordering it. Two very greasy taco shells, were only 1cm thick including their meagre contents. The "chilli" meat sauce did not taste of chilli or anything remotely Mexican. There was only a few shreds of lettuce, and the small amount of meat and lettuce were topped with Thai sweet chilli sauce! Good Mexican Tacos should contain or be served with cheese, sour cream, guacamole and chilli salsa. These pathetic offerings had none of these ingredients. I ate two bites and gave up. The "chef" didn't even apologise and I wasn't offered a refund.
I'd suggest their "chef" buys a Taco kit from Tesco's. If he follows the instructions he will get an idea of what a Mexican Taco tastes like. I'd go for the Tesco's tacos any day over the ones I was served at the Red Lion.
By all means enjoy the Red Lion, as a very good pub, but don't bother with food if it's all as bad as the...
Read more30th March 2025. First time visit, booked Sunday lunch which we was looking forward to after seeing reviews and pictures of food, very disappointing. Starter nearly £7 prawn cocktail was so small not manyy prawns and had tomatoes in it. Roast£16 odd Roast beef was very tough could not cut it Roast potatoes not cooked enough infact some undercooked and hard inside, no home made yorkshire frozen all the veg was mixed together on the plate possibly frozen and ready made stuffing, some of the party had missing items. Lack of cutlery only 1 salt and pepper pot on table for 8, no sauces had to keep requesting. BIGGEST THING A AFTERNOON SINGER THAT WAS FAR FROM GOOD SO LOUD YOU COULD NOT HAVE A COVERSATION WITH YOUR FAMILY ON MOTHER'S DAY. BETTER TO DITCH THE SINGER IN DINING TIME, JUST A BIT OF BACK GROUND MUSIC OR SOMEHING ALL THAT'S IS NEEDED WHIILE YOU EAT WITH FRIEND AND FAMILY NOT A SINGER WHO STROLLS AROUND THE PLACE WITH A MICROPHONE LOUDLY SINGING. WILL NOT Be visiting again also the one of the ladies toilets need cleaning. Better of with a Toby Carvery than here cost less and better quality don't waste you...
Read moreNot sure about this one since the refurb. Was once a daily visitor, now I rarely make it in. In the last 5 trips I have been charged 3 different prices for my pint, ranging from £3.90 to £5.70. When I questioned this I was grunted at and then ignored. Often a bitter comes with 1/4 pint head on it which you have to ask to be topped up. The female bar staff are very polite and know what they are doing, as do most of the men, though there are 2 males who are permanently grumpy and unfriendly. You spot them immediately. Find another server!! The food is expensive for what you get and have had a couple of very bad meals now. Overall I often prefer to make the extra effort and walk up the Bull if I'm just heading out for a pint or the anchor if I'm after food. Both of which are also dog and family friendly.
Update. Just retried it... probably best to put the swerve on it. Could be a really nice place but for the small number of staff...
