It’s game day , you spend all day thinking where to watch the game. You decide to go to your local sports pub thinking it should be way better than watching the game at home. Aaaaand you were wrong. 19:30 champions league Wednesday two English teams playing quarter finals , there’s about 10 screens and all of them showing just 1 game. Of course arsenal have more fans in Crystal Palace but their next game could be vs City. Anyway, you came from work you think what’s better than best football competition with a few pints and some bar food. Well not much would be better but you won’t get it here. Turns out kitchen is closed, fair enough whatever happened you couldn’t open the kitchen but why keep the food menus on the tables if you know you have a full house for the game and you won’t serve any food? You might think ok at least the service will be friendly and you’ll feel welcome. How many times can you get this wrong? The best you can get is if you get a drink, certain beer lines not available, none of the staff will acknowledge you at the bar and you can forget about a smile or anything resembling hospitality. Only positive was that they put the sound on for the game . The most expensive pub chain in the area and the worst experience even though it’s the only “sports pub” nearby. Won’t be back,...
Read moreHave been trying all the pubs in the Crystal Palace, Sydenham, Dulwich area and so far this tops the list for a sunday lunch. Lovely pub inside, food was very good. There was an issue with our order getting lost somehow and yes this meant we waited nearly an hour for our food but we were in no rush and they offered the food on the house, we accepted free wine instead as we'd already paid. I'll be returning definitely. The duck was nice, the beef was nicer. Could do with a bit more spuds in their serving but otherwise can't complain. If they get the food balance a bit better and there are no issues with our next order i'd consider upping the review to a 5.
Revisited this Sunday and nice prompt service this time. This is definitely the best sunday dinner in the area that I've tried. Still not 5 star and I'm being picky here but the potatoes they use aren't nice enough. Change your spuds and make some proper fluffed up roasties and you'll get that extra star in review. Also they do this weird eggy fluffy thing that i've no idea what it is but it's added to every roast and isn't nice. Pork roast while slightly overcooked underneath was very tasty. I really want to give 5 stars to this place. I hope they read these comments and make...
Read moreSlightly disappointed overall. Staff were friendly enough, but the food was underwhelming at best. We went for the lunch menu, consisting of a sub sandwich and chips. There was no subs left, so we received wraps as a substitute. Much to our disappointment, the wraps were tiny and there was hardly any filling. I thought I would treat myself as it’s Christmas, so I paid an extra £1.50 for chilli fries (YOLO). What I received for this, was not intact chilli fries, but standard fries with a light sprinkle of peri salt and 3 small chunks of red chilli. 🤷🏻♂️ Initially, I thought this was a wind up, but nobody was laughing, so I soon came to the realisation that The Sparrowhawk considered this to be an acceptable offering. My partner found this hilarious, so I suppose that’s a positive in her eyes.
To add insult to injury, we realised at the end of the meal that we had been overcharged! In typical British fashion, we decided to not say anything and left with a disgruntled feeling. Why do we do that? 🤷🏻♂️
Not one for unnecessarily marking down restaurants, so here’s the positives. The decor inside makes for a pleasant and atmospheric setting, and there’s a good selection of drinks behind the bar.
