The Star of Kings Pub (SoK) is friendly and welcoming. The private karaoke room however is not up to the usual high standards expected of Lucky Voice.
I have been a regular of Lucky Voice in Soho for around 10 years and also familiar with the other rooms in Luck Voice Islington, Holborn and Liverpool St. Martha Lane Fox (co-owner and founder of lucky voice) would be most unimpressed with the the way in which the Lucky Voice brand values are so poorly reflected in SoK Kings Cross.
The SoK room is a good size and would work well for parties of up to 12 or so people. The walls and ceiling are lined with rather tacky and drab looking sound proofing panels, and windows are sealed to prevent noise pollution disturbing the nearby residential areas. Consequently, the room smells dank and musty...SoK should leave the room open to air when not in use.
The biggest let down though is the sound equipment. The sound levels were quite low for such a big room and the left hand speaker crackled like it was blown. The amplifier was OK (echo, reverb) but the volume was just too low for a big room....we were just 2 persons, so with 12 people the sound will be somewhat muted.
I pointed out the blown speaker to a member of staff who informed me that they knew about the issue and were in the process of getting it fixed. If that is the case, SoK are being a bit disingenuous taking £99 for a 2 hour booking when they know the equipment is not functioning properly.
the last small point is the time spent going downstairs to the bar to buy a couple of drinks. It was a Tuesday night, the pub was not busy but the bar service was very slow, made worse by the girl being unable to add my drinks to the existing bar tab...another 10 minutes less of singing to complete the round trip, or around £8.50. Lucky Voice service to the room in other branches is excellent without exception. SoK would do well to take a leaf out of their book and offer bar service to the room for their bar prices + 12.5% service charge...
In summary, we felt short changed on the night. The room may improve in future. I hope it does as there is great potential there for private parties.

Read moreI went to Star of Kings today with 2 of my mates and 3 children. Having not met for a long time we decided to go for a roast.... to a place with 'Good reviews ... EPIC FAIL... nothing went right....
Let me just start by HIGHLIGHTING that if you DO NOT want a sunday roast! Do not go here as this is all they serve on sundays apparently!
WHERE IT ALL CONTINUES TO GO WRONG!!!
My mate has a gluten intolerance and has to ask the waiter 3 times about this... he clearly said its fine but she could not have the Yorkshire pudding and would have to have the vegetarian gravy.
When her beef brisket roast came out... she couldn't eat the beef as she was only given the fatty bits . They put the Yorkshire pudding on her plate regardless of her intolerance. When she raised this she was told yes she cannot have it but it was put on the plate for show.
Getting it wrong once is ok, HOWEVER I too asked for gluten free and was also given a Yorkshire pudding with the same reasoning.
Thirdly.... We all know toddlers eat absolutely anything .... in this case her child refused to eat his food too .... ( this 3 year old was also able to refer to the toilets as not smelling fresh).
Fourthly...The 3 adult servings didn't get the cauliflower cheese which comes within the roast.
Food was absolutely poor... the manager came out as my friend decided to share her views and the manager decided to remove the soft drinks off the bill at the end.
SUMMING UP our experience... we were then FORCED to pay a service charge for incorrect food and poor service as it goes to the CHEF.... HELLO what about the fact of everything that went wrong (as...

I rarely leave reviews, but my experience at this pub was so appalling that I feel compelled to warn others. Unfortunately, the night was ruined by two key issues: the behavior of the security staff and the terrible service at the bar.
First, the security guards were shockingly unprofessional and rude. Rather than ensuring the safety of patrons and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere, they seemed more interested in exerting unnecessary authority. From the moment we arrived, their hostility was palpable. They spoke to us in an aggressive tone for no apparent reason, treating us like troublemakers even though we were nothing but polite. One of them even made sarcastic comments that were completely uncalled for, making the whole experience uncomfortable and embarrassing.
The bar service wasn’t any better. It took ages to get served, despite the pub not being particularly busy. The bartenders appeared completely uninterested, moving at a snail’s pace and showing no urgency whatsoever. To make matters worse, when we finally got served, the staff were dismissive and borderline rude. Our drinks were sloppily prepared, with no care or professionalism, and we were overcharged for what we ordered.
What should have been an enjoyable evening turned into a stressful and disappointing experience. It’s clear this pub needs to address its staff training—both for the security team and the bar staff—if they want to retain customers.
I won’t be returning and would advise anyone who values respectful treatment and decent service to steer clear. One star, because zero...
