This place is really a restaurant - don't think there is sufficient non-dining seating for it to even be called a gastropub. The inside is not sympathetic to the wonderful Georgian exterior. Feels a little tired. It was heavily staffed but none of them seemed a particularly happy and welcoming bunch of campers - gut instinct it could be down to bad management. Service was not particularly efficient - had to repeat our order several times. We had a Bloody Mary which was excellent and a great pint of Crate pale ale. We ordered a side of chips and some olives which were excellent - best portion of chips I've had for a long time! I understand the food is good and, the slightly iffy/frosty service aside, I would return.
Jan 2020 - to update my slightly snippy review from 2 year ago! and to add a star. Popped in today and again was served with 2 good bloody Mary's. The bar staff seemed a far more cheery bunch and service was efficient. The place was bustling. Couldn't get a portion of chips as the kitchen was closed but do think I need to return to dine here...
Read moreThe Wells Tavern is one of Hampstead's best gastro pubs offering all that is needed to be a neighbourhood favourite including a great location, outside seating with heaters and large canopies, good service, tasty food and two floors offering formal and informal dinning. The prices are on the high end when compared to other areas of town, but it is part of the "Hampstead premium".
The ground floor is a traditional bar with tables, sofas and all around dog friendliness. The food menu includes plates of chorizo with red pepper and gherkins, cod fishcakes, burgers and grilled tuna steak. Tables outside are at a premium when the sun shines. The upstairs is made up of three small dining rooms, with a more formal menu and setting. The scallops (£14.50) part of the starter menu where fresh and full of flavour, while the ribeye steak (£29.50) was tasty. The portion of chips could be larger but they were perfectly cooked. The duck leg (£19.85) was cooked perfectly.A great spot for drinks, a quick bite to eat or a more formal meal if you do not mind the...
Read moreGreat location for a pub and dog friendly too, which pleases the wife mightily. Overall friendly staff and an average selection of beers. Great place to sit outside on a warm, sunny day and watch the people walk past. We went for a Sunday lunch. I had the burger which was actually quite good. They didn't serve it medium as I requested, more well done, but it was still tasty. Great fries. The wife had the roast beef which upon first bite seemed good. As she started getting into it she noticed the beef was strangely mushy, almost liver-like in its texture. I had a few bites and had to agree. It was unpleasant and left an odd, not very beefy taste in our mouths. Their policy on gravy is annoying; serve you up a teaspoonful then charge you £1.50 for more. Even then it wasn't nice and left our lips sticking together from their overuse of cornflour to thicken it up. Poor show. Gonna have to give this one three stars as a result. Maybe try one of the other roasts or go for the burger instead. Or just enjoy it as a place to have a few drinks with...
