A True Bulgarian Tale – An Authentic Tavern with Heart and Soul From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a warm, homely atmosphere – the aroma of roasted food, wood, and herbs, a cozy setting with traditional motifs, and smiling faces all around. The interior is a beautiful mix of rustic charm and modern comfort – a fireplace, wooden beams, handwoven rugs, and copper pots hanging on the walls. The menu is a true celebration for lovers of Bulgarian cuisine. From a fresh shopska salad, grilled meats, to traditional dishes like kapama and gyuvech – everything is prepared with care and full of flavor. I must also mention the homemade rakia, which perfectly complements the atmosphere and makes every evening even more special. The service was top-notch – the staff is attentive, friendly, and happy to recommend the best from the kitchen. You feel like you’re among friends, not just a customer. If you’re looking for a genuine Bulgarian experience – with music, delicious food, and warm hospitality – this tavern is the place to be. Highly recommended, and I’ll definitely be coming back!

We went on a Saturday night and only 2 other tables were occupied so fab service. The food was amazing and there were empty plates all round. The music added to the atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. Such a shame that this place isn't rammed on a Saturday night, it's definitely nothing they are doing because our night was so good and we were so full. Unfortunately this place is in a scary bit of Maidstone. Walking up 10 teens wearing masks walked up to us purposely very close and loads of people hanging around outside made me feel a little unsafe. If this was in the high st or in Rochester it would be rammed.

Traditional at its core this Bulgarian restaurant transports the customer to the fringes of Eastern Europe with its hospitality and themed interior. Being a foreigner to its plethora of dishes I wished the menu came with pictures to make my selection easier. If you do go for a main be sure to go for the sizzling satch. It’s served smoking hot, a meat dish for 2 persons, with a selection of veggies and cheese topping this hearty dish. All food was freshly prepared, but lacked attention to detail. Value, Mehana offers in spades and portion size will suit anyone with a big appetite.

We had the ‘pleasure’ to eat at this restaurant a few times but the last two visits were HORRIBLE!

For starters, some of the food was great but the rest was cheap, tasteless semi-ready food purchased from a nearby supermarket!

We recommended the place to our family friends as well and spent around £500-600(We were around 13 people both times), during these two visits our orders were delayed for more than one hour as the waitress had FORGOTTEN TO TAKE NOTES and order the requested food NOT ONCE but TWICE! My partner and another man were waiting 1 hour and 40 minutes for a piece of lamb and green salad and were charged £40 just for it! On a separate occasions one of the plates was completely MISSED and it was for a 9 year old kid who waited 1 hour and a half for chicken and fries! IMAGINE THAT!

The waitress(who also seems to be one of the owners) also MARKED EXTRA drinks and food to our bill, which we DID NOT CONSUME or order!

She was also “giving instructions” to my partner - a Client who is just looking to sit down and relax, to bring in chairs for the kids as she is busy… While doing this she also decided to tap him on the shoulder which I find very funny as we are not friends, nor people who know each other and going into someone’s else space and touching him/her just screams UNPROFESSIONALISM and BAD MANNERS! *Just because you are busier than usual and/or are short of staff does not mean you can ask your Clients to basically serve themselves!!!

To add more to this “wonderful”experience - the same waitress was shouting over the phone on both occasions and acted as a clown making sure everyone in the restaurant is aware that they have delayed our order making us feel even more UNCOMFORTABLE.

All in all - please AVOID this place. The people working there are complete AMATEURS with BAD MANNERS and clearly do not know how to...

First and last visit! Awful management and poor food quality and performance.

We waited too long to get a menu at our table and then waited extra to order. The food started coming almost an hour after.

My salad arrived almost last, after the chips and bread and the main dishes of the others, and it wasn't what I orderer maybe because of inconsistencies between the menu and the cook. The chips, which as said on the menu should be fresh, was either microwaved or had waited too long before being served to the table. At one point I was snacking only on the bread that I ordered because it was getting cold and the food wasn't coming.

We ended up having and paying for an extra dish that nobody had clearly ordered.

The atmosphere was fun. Definitely what you'll expect from such a Bulgarian place but what left me with a really bad impression was the manager/boss lady clearly shouting at people to stand up and dance. At one point she even came to our table and asked me if I'll be drinking more and after saying no, they took my glass which still had some drink left in it. They said they don't have enough glasses.

Well, maybe buy some more with the money that you get from overcrowding that place, saving from good quality food and having less staff working at busy nights.

The place will definitely benefit from better management and more staff. And until then, I'm really ashamed of what you call Bulgarian cuisine.

p.s. I usually don't write reviews but seeing the good ones here really triggered me...
