Read moreStruggling to find a pub with car park for lunch in Cardigan in the pouring rain, we ventured off towards Fishguard. Having slowed in traffic in Newport we saw the Castle Inn which, from the exterior, presented itself well. A narrow entrance just at the side revealed a small car park. However there is additional parking in the village. The car park led to a rear entrance and a warm and welcoming bar area. It was not busy when we arrived, which was fortunate as it soon filled. This enabled us to secure a table for two and order early. The staff were friendly and efficient, and after scouring our menus we both settled on fish and chips with mushy peas and a half pint glass of bitter shandy each. £32. There were sufficient choices of food ie: curry, burgers lasagne, sausages, tagliatelle with Bolognese together with choices for vegetarians. Starters and desserts were also available. The fish and chips were some of the best I have eaten. The mushy peas were in a pot. Pea shoots decorated the fish. Neither of us have additional salt in our meals at home. The fish was sprinkled with sea salt, which I found palatable as I like salt as a 'treat'. My wife left some of her batter as salt disagrees with her. Please do not avoid dining here because of the salt. Just ask for it with or without. Perhaps the chef could provide a separate bowl of salt on the plate for the customer to measure their own. There were TV screens showing the cricket world cup with no sound on, which is good for those interested whilst waiting for their order to arrive, or a tourist magazine for the area to browse. There is also a pool table in a separate area, and a restaurant that was closed at the time we arrived Overall a very pleasant inn that is very clean, with hint of rustic character and good food. What better place to get out of the cold and rain for...
