Was in the local area looking at the Burial Chambers. Went into Newport looking for somewhere to eat.( Monday lunchtime) Royal Oak had a board outside "food served all day". Once inside was informed smaller menu, lighter lunch meals. I ordered the whitebait, c/w salad, coleslaw, bread and butter, wife had quiche, c/w salad, chips, coleslaw. Thought not going to be enough for me, so I ordered a side dish of chips. When they brought the food to table I thought that was a mistake ordering the chips. Food was excellent, service was excellent, portions was very big, ( didn't quite eat all the chips) prices was very good, will definitely eat there again if in the area.

Food was lovely, and filling I couldn't finish mine. but the signs everywhere stating if kids are with you they need to be quiet and not run around where off putting. Especially when It sounded like a Hurd of elephants live upstairs. 1 sign near the bar would have been enough. Also cod and haddock are completely different fish. Haddock is flakier and drier. Service wasn't that great either the young boy who brought out our food sounded as if he didn't want to be there. Overall if you want somewhere for great food come here but dont expect great service.

Very good place very underrated on Google by people who expected 5 star service from a local pub. By the way the food is very tasty, the place is open all day all week when other restaurants are closed. Here lives welsh soul of Newport people, you can hear Welsh language and taste Welsh food. The staff also is very friendly. We stayed in Newport one week and there was no question to try another place for dinner.

We visited today for a Sunday lunch, it was very busy but we were quickly shown a table. We ordered & paid for our drinks and meals & waited.....& waited. There was no indication from the staff of how long the waiting time was.... However when our meals arrived they were lovely, we decided to order a dessert, but for the price the portions were tiny. If the kitchen can't keep up with the orders coming through then communicate with your front of house staff who can then keep customers informed & maybe explain the waiting time when guests wish to order meals. I would like to commend Alison, this lady was here, there & everywhere, sorting takeaway mix ups, calming waiting guests, serving both food & drinks & clearing tables. The other lady too (sorry didn't get your name) was busy serving drinks & keeping the bar area clean, as for the two young lads we saw.....come on at least smile while delivering food & pick up the pace a little. Being in hospitality myself I know communication is the key to a smooth shift, remember happy staff, happy customers! Thank You, we...

Staying in Wales for a week and visiting Cardigan, we asked in a local coffee shop if they knew somewhere good to eat in Newport our next destination? They recommended The Royal Oak saying it may not look much from the outside but the food is great. So off we went and we certainly weren't disappointed. We ordered the sea bass with lemon sauce, the Hunter chicken and 2 different curries with rice. The food came and we were all seriously impressed at the quantity and then the quality. The lamb curry was so tender, the king prawn so fresh and plenty of them. The sea bass was huge with amazing lemon sauce and the Hunters chicken comprised two chicken breasts with an amazing sauce. The service was spot and staff were very helpful and friendly. Nice local beers in a very homely pub. We will definitely make a special visit to eat here again. Thank you to all concerned, well done. Had an awful experience using their take-out service.

I ordered a large family meal coming to just under £60. I get home to discover three items (2 naan and a rice) missing. When talking to the barmaid earlier in the day she assured me of their "huge" portions. Bullshit.

Those plastic trays you usually get from your local Indian are what the food is served in and they're half full. Lamb Rogan Josh £11.50 a portion, 5-6 shoddy looking lumps of meat. The naan breads are just those doughy lumps you'd probably get alongside a microwave meal, not even cooked through.

Phoned up to complain and got a perplexed response of "Errm, well what do you want me to do?" From a waitor, haha.

Seriously,...
