Brilliant hidden gem in Whitley bay, I love food at Di Meos. Having been a customer for years for ice cream we decided to sit in one day and realised they do food aswell. We visited on Saturday where there was a huge queue as normal outside for ice cream and we went straight inside to be sat straight away. We were asked if we were in for food or ice cream. Waitress kindly told us we had the table an hour and a half for food. This is because the restaurant is so small. We didn’t even need the full hour and a half. We did over hear that of you are in for coffee & ice cream you get the table for 45 minutes which is ample time to eat an ice cream. I had spaghetti Bolognese and it was beautiful. Pasta was cooked just enough and the bolognese had plenty of flavour. My husband had a pepperoni pizza which was also beautifully made. We then followed out meals with ice cream & cannolis the ice cream awards can be found all over the restaurant and it is worthy of those rewards. Husband said the cannolis were nice. If you just want ice cream on a sunny day you can queue at the window outside but be prepared for a queue. It is very popular. The restaurant itself has a traditional rustic Italian feel. We will definitely be back. The restaurant itself last orders are around 7.30pm so it is a day time restaurant and not an evening restaurant. They also offer a take...
Read moreDi Meo's is like a little slice of Italy right here in Whitley Bay. If you're after some real Italian pizza, this is the place to go. The location is brilliant, just a stone's throw from the beach, making it the perfect place to grab a bite before or after a stroll by the sea. The pizzas are fantastic - authentic, with that classic thin crust and fresh toppings that make you think you're in Italy.
When you walk in, you're greeted by a colourful array of gelato. It feels like stepping into a mini Italy, with all sorts of traditional Italian treats on offer. I have to admit, though, that the gelato wasn't really for me. I'm used to the rich, creamy taste of Turkish goat's milk ice cream and the thick texture of Maraş dondurması, so the Italian style didn't quite hit my taste buds. But that's more a matter of personal preference than quality - it's clear they know what they're doing.
One little thing I wasn't too keen on was the waffle they put on top of the ice cream. It just didn't do it for me, a bit too dry and bland. But honestly, it's a small thing in the grand scheme of things. The staff are lovely and you can tell they take pride in what they do. Overall, I'd still recommend Di Meo's, especially for the pizza - it's a real Italian...
Read moreA life changing experience for all the wrong reasons. Highly recommended to me by friends and colleagues. My feedback should provide for some enjoyable recanting of adventures past.
There's no doubt that the ice cream here may well be very nice. I wouldn't know. We ordered two scoop pots to takeaway thinking we could quickly walk the short distance to the car, no problem.
However after twenty seconds the amount of ice cream melted from the insufficiently sized cardboard pot out onto my hands, arms, feet and the surrounding Bay area far outweighed the contents of the receptacle.
This did make for some memorable moments. Not least myself trying to take shelter, unsuccessfully, around the corner of a nearby establishment. Being battered by high winds from the North Sea my girlfriend had a great laugh as we troubleshooted our way through this encounter with a bottle of water and the drying powers of a 70mph gust (use your imagination).
If taking away, and you have long hair, secure your hair first, and ask for a...
